Hello all. I happen to know a couple of little kids who won’t be little much longer. Both are leftys. Everyone else is a rightie.

I’d like to buy a new.22 LR to teach the brats to shoot. I’d prefer a rifle that can be shared by the leftys and righties, and that will easily accept a scope. I was thinking about just buying a semi auto like a ruger or something. Would a lefty have any problems with a regular right side ejection on a semi? Your suggestions are appreciated!

AR style 22s with the M4 telescoping stock for being able to accommodate the maximum number of differently sized shooters

I have personally used an aforementioned AR type 22, Remington 597, Ruger 10/22, and Marlin 60s left handed with no problems caused by being a lefty.

  • Fit being very important for proper learning and safety! (I learned on full sized stock stuffed under my armpit :cuss:)
  • The manual of arms translates well to center fire later in life
  • Probably hits a “cool” quotient with the kids!

My suggestion would be to ignore their dominant hand and put the gun in front of their dominant eye. They may be cross dominant like me.

I would prefer a bolt action to teach a kid to shoot. Slower rate of fire and no spray 'n pray.

That said, I am southpaw, left eye dominant and like the 10/22. Cheaper than a AR platform.

I agree, have them shoot using their dominant eye. They will enjoy shooting more that way since they will be able to see and hit the targets better.

I am right hand/left eye dominant and have never had any issues shooting any semi-auto 22 rifle. I own several versions of the Marlin along with a 10/22 and an older Winchester Model 190.

They might but might as well get going on learning to adapt. Tang/no safety, break open are equal if you have both kinds of kids.

Semiauto, the SA-22 is right load (in the stock) and right safety but does charge/eject from the bottom and will teach kids to not hold a rifle like this,

I was reminded every so often to never forget to roll my sleeves down and button the very top button on my BDU's the shooting the M16A1. Hot brass going down your shirt or landing in the crook fo your elbow doesn't feel so good. And that is one of the many reasons I prefer the M16A2 over the A1.
