I still own my first handgun, a late 80s Taurus PT92, bought new when I was 20 (Dad had to sign for it – ah, the memories).

11in6mq.jpg (web image - I don't have a current pic of my 92, but it looks close to, but better than, this one! :p

It’s become a bit of a safe queen, and I’m thinking of bringing into more serious service – depending on it for home defense, and carry in the right clothes (deep conceal already covered with other guns).

For the first 21 years of its life, it had ZERO malfunctions of any kind. Last time out, it had 2 stovepipes, and one out of battery discharge  (hopefully bad ammo related). I’m still operating with the factory 15rd mag, so I know that needs replaced, and likely accounted for the stovepipes.

It’s been maintained perfectly, but still is full of 20+ year old parts. What else should I do to restore it to like-new reliability. What springs, etc.? Just as important, where should I get them? It also still has the tiny factory sights – any recommendations there? I think I'll put slim Hogue panel grips (or maybe CTC grips) to preserve the walnut grips.

Lastly, I think it’s covered by Taurus’ lifetime guarantee – should I send it back to them for some of this work (I can do without the gun for a couple months, no biggie)? I don’t even know what exactly to tell them is "wrong" – I’ve heard they frown on people making vague repair requests under warranty.

I might buy an M&P45 before the current rebate expires at the end of April, then I’d rely on this thing less, but I still want to refurbish it. Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks, and best regards,
FranklyTodd

Frankly, Todd, I don't give a ... Sorry buddy! I couldn't resist when I saw your username.

I like that Taurus! My first purchase was a PT99AF (pretty much the same as yours, just had adjustable rather than fixed sites) at around the same time - '85/'86 or so. I traded mine away quite a while ago but my Taurus was definitely a great gun. Never failed to fire or eject any ammo I put in it. I can't say it was a "tackdriver" but recall it having very good accuracy (even though I've never been the best shot on the line!) Remember "Brazilian Beretta" was a nickname with purpose. These Taurus handguns were built on machinery in Brazil that Taurus purchased from Beretta. There is very little - probably zero - difference between the Taurus and Beretta guns built by both companies on the same equipment.

I can tell you that I replaced the grips with some black rubber checkered grip panels that felt significantly thinner than the wood ones but gave an even better grip on it. (Possibly the same Hogues you mentioned?) Those grips made a huge difference for me. After all this time you may want to replace the mags springs (not necessarily the entire mag if it's not damaged) and recoil spring. Could be a quick and easy fix. It wouldn't hurt to give Taurus a call or contact them by e-mail and see if they have any other recommendations. They may even offer you free replacement on those springs. If not, they are not expensive and any gun shop can order them for you.

You've kept it this long, now you can never sell or trade it! Enjoy and be safe!

Thanks Jim - many that have compared the Taurus 92/99 to the Beretta actually prefer the Taurus - the one major change Taurus made was moving the safety from the slide to the frame. Most prefer it on the frame.

I looked at trading it in on something about a year ago (forget what) and the shop offered $100! I'm glad they did, because if I'd traded it (at any price) I think I'd be regretting it. Every other gun I have is a tool (Glock 26, S&W340 for example). This one is my only handgun that has some sentimental value.
