Autoloading Rifles

I was curious if their were any cheap autoloading rifles in a centerfire cartridge out their that are not defensive weapons (like ARs, SKS, AKs,etc.)

I just don't see hunting rifles much any more that are not bolt action and was wondering if their are still new autoloaders out their that are say under $600 give or take?

in light of the fact that AR's, SKS's and even AK's have and will continue to be used for hunting..............



Remington makes several, Winchester has some and the Browning BAR is still around, prices seem to start around $650 or so and can probably be found for less if a guy looks hard enough

I would recommend the BAR, they can be had in near mint condition around here for $600.- including a scope. You take care of them and your grandkids will be shooting them.

The BAR shoots like a bolt gun; can't beat it for an autoloader. Remington 742 and 7400 are all over the place. The 7400 I have shoots +/- 4" groups at 100 yds, so I don't speak highly of them.

If I had to have one, it would be a BAR...The Remingtons are well known for their jamming problems and inaccuracy even when they do feed correctly.

There are a bunch of variants of the AR that are designed for hunting 4 legged critters instead of the 2 legged kind... Remington R-15 and R-25, DPMS LR-308L, just to name a couple off the top of my head.

Or you can custom build an AR with whatever parts you want for whatever purpose you want to use it for. It is a very accurate design, it can be light weight, you can build it in a variety of calibers, it is very optics friendly, and it's reliability issues don't matter as much for hunting as they do for a battle rifle. I think it would be hard to do better than an AR for a semi auto hunting rifle. Either the regular AR-15 frame, or any one of the larger frames that take rounds in the .308 family.

Not real nuts about semi-autos for hunting but the BAR would be my choice. I watched a guy at the range (not a slob hunter, this guy shoots sub-MOA with a pistol) unbox a brand new BAR .308, mount a scope, sight it in and proceed to shoot half inch groups at 100yds with factory ammo. He couldn't be talked out of it and wore a stupid grin for the rest of the day.

Don't forget that you can get a fully functional, service grade Garand from CMP for less than that, and many a deer have fallen before those. I wouldn't really consider them tactical or defensive weapons.

Only thing i hate about thhe BAR's is, you have to keep them VERY clean, or they jam. Yes some Remingtom semi auto's are less accurate, but mine shoots very good and never jams.

We've had 4 or 5 Rems around, and only one was not all that accurate, but was still good enough for hunting. (3" groups at 100yds)

I have a Rem. 30-06 and a BAR in 300 Win. Mag. right now, the BAR is forsale.

I have never noticed my 375/338 BAR to be finicky about having to be kept squeaky clean, despite my somewhat lackadaisical cleaning habits it runs perfectly.

I purchased a used Remington model 4 .243 for $500. My handloads shoot about 1-1.5 inches at 100 meters. Factory ammo does not do so well. I have seen Remington 7400 30-06 rifles go for $400-$500.......

A guy at work has a Remington Model 4 in a .270 for $450 with a Red Field 3x9 scope, the gun is in great condition with a beautiful finish, i might go this route. I was planning on buying an AR but bills took up most of my tax money so i was curious to other autoloading rifles out their that i could look into.
