Automatic firearms--what's the draw?

Get your hands on a FA MP5. You will see why people like FA so much.

I've fired M2s, 240s, and other real, actual machine guns, and I don't find full-auto all that exciting. Why would a little, puny 9mm not-quite-a-machine-gun be more fun?

Other than the historic perspective, I've never seen the attraction myself. Back in the '80's, I owed several (converted AR-15, American 180, Sten). Shot them a few times, made a lot of noise, kicked up a lot of dirt, missed a bunch of times and got bored.

I'm glad I didn't dump them back then because they because quite valuable and earned me a nice margin when I did sell them a few years back.

I guess my resistance to the whole spray and pray concept is why I didn't particularly care for them. A tacticool mall ninjas dream come true I guess. *shrug*

Wouldn't the "tacticool" mall ninja types have fun if they were still easily available today?

and I don't see the attraction in getting up before the crack of 4 am to sit in a tree in the freezing cold so I can blow away every wild animal I see, but I will defend someone else who chooses to do so, because in America freedom is not measured in whether or not we do what we want, but in how we support others in their right to do what THEY want.

Why do people keep saying stuff like that? Is this thread about the right to keep and bear FA weapons? No. Did the OP ask why people should be allowed to own FA weapons? No. He just asked why people like them so much. So don't be so defensive, folks. Other than woody, I don't think anybody in this thread wants to take your FA away.

Wow. It's sad that some people haven't fired a full auto. I get the best pics of people when they just get done with their first mag or belt of full tilt boogey.

Does this look like fun?

It does to me.

I actually am drawn to them but my lof (lack of funds) keep erasing the drawing. I have fired them and do love it but cannot afford it.

I could convert my Ruger 10-22 to full auto and pay $200 and have an economical machine gun but its too much hassle for me.

Sorry for not running my opinion by you before posting.

CURRENTLY, that would run a lot more than $200, as you'd have to buy an already made MG for $9.5k or so.

PTK,
9k is very expensive but the good side is ammo is practically cheap compared to bigger calibers you can get a brick of 500 .22lr for $20 and for other calibers you get only 20 or 50 rounds for $20.
When I am 21 in 3 years I will invest and have a good career by then and probably be able to afford a decent machine gun and it will probably be a full auto .22lr like Ruger 10-22.

I've shot them and the appeal is that they are a great deal of fun (as long as the thought of the cost doesn't spoil it for you).

I got to fire SMG's at Front Sight and while it was a ton of fun, the $$$ one would cost could buy me a lot of other fun toys

How about if the rest of us are allowed to have the opinion that full-auto is not our thing, without people assuming that we don't support the right to own them? And BTW, I quoted your post because it was the most recent. Don't take it personally.

Because it makes your WWII collection more complete...and, you can yell, "Yeeeehaaaaa" while you are varmint hunting BEFORE you start shooting. :D

I can just see the next THR target shooting contest...

..."download this target and print...must use iron sights...must shoot full auto...must not be wearing pants...post pictures of your target, but not of yourself, by the end of this month..."
