6 shot SB 4" 617. Was this a low production model? I've seen exactly one for sale in the last 10-12 years. Maybe they're like the pre 18 I own. No one ever sells them?

Thanks for the advice but I'm pretty sure there's plenty of S&W info right here. It might take a while longer than the smarty pants S&W forum. But I've got time. I don't want to do a WTB till I find out how rare and costly they are. The current SB S&W revolvers are actually RB with conversion grips. I don't care for them. I like the wood targets. Thanks for response, Jim

Per the Standard Catalog of S&W:

Product code 100563, six shot four inch square butt, no underlug, 200 manufactured in 1991.

Product code 100564 six shot 4 inch square butt, underlug, manufactured 1990-1995.

Product code 100565 six shot 4 inch round butt with square butt grips, underlug, manufactured 1995-2001.

All the other listings are for 10 shot or special run round butts, so yes, it was only made for a few years as a six shot square butt gun.

O.K. THANKYOU. As I said I took a pass on one I saw at a show about 10 years ago for $375. I remember it cause it's the only one I've ever seen, and the guy selling it wouldn't budge from the selling price. At that point you could buy 17's for $300, and 14's and 15's all day for $250 or less. I saw the guy with that gun at several shows before he sold it. S&W's were being boycotted around then. Hardcore guys boycotted even used guns
