These are made to directly compete with FN's PBR. The only thing the PBR has more is chrome lining and controlled round feed, but it is also $400 more.
If you can live with a 26" barrel, get the SPS Varmint. It is the identical barrel and action as the 700P (police), only difference? Comes in a cheaper stock and has a less durable finish. Although, that same lesser-durable finish is what comes on the SPS Tactical line. You could buy a take-off 700P stock for no more than $200 (often $175 average) and save $250 off of buying the 700P itself. That extra cash buys you the best picatinny rail and rings out there. Or, goes to buying better glass.
If you want the Tactical because it is 20" ....these are in high demand and supply is low. Will just have to wait a while. Remington made a whole lot more of those in .223 than they did .308. Personally, if I am going to go .308, then that means I want to hit something past 400m ..if I'm going to do that, I don't want a 20" barrel either. Many say 20" is fine in .308 for out to 500. But for me, if it is short range, then I want a .223 and a 20" barrel. If it is longer, I'd want .308 with a 24" or 26" barrel. In my mind, they go together this way.
The other option is the LTR.
Like in this thread, people tend to interchange the terms PSS (or P) and LTR. The LTR's are 20" fluted barrels in a more slim HS Precision stock. The 700P's are 26" barrels, non-fluted, in more beefy HS Precision stock.
P = Police
LTR = Light tactical rifle.
