I was listening to NPR on the way in to work this A.M.; no snide comments please...! They had a story about the bill to modify class action lawsuits that would tilt some of the advantage away from the trial lawyers. After NPR got done trashing the bill, they had a separate segment on how Frist used some obscure parliamentary procedures to prevent unrelated additions to the bill.

The Dems squawked about it, of course, and NPR made it sound like adding unrelated junk to popular bills was the time-honored and "founding father approved" way of doing business in the Senate. They pissed and moaned about Frist blocking unrelated additions, and specifically mentioned the AWB renewal. In a surprising twist, though, NPR referred to the AWB as "a ban on certain types of semi-automatic assault style rifles", which is about the most honest description I've heard from the mainstream media.

Anyway, it looks like Frist is using all the tricks to block last-minute, unrelated additions to popular bills. Let's hope it works.

"a ban on certain types of semi-automatic assault style rifles",
I'd like "a ban on certain types of semi-automatic rifles" better.

Good for Frist.

Heard the same. I'd like Frist's approach to limiting unrelated ammendments to bills to be the norm instead of the "traditional" way in which endless cockleburr riders are added to legislation so that they don't have to dealt with on their own merits.

Remember "line-item vetos" guys that Newt Gingrich and his Contract With America Passed? -only to be overturned by the Supreme court. What else is new!

There were two opportunities for the Wicked B!tch of the West (WBOTW) to attach an AWB renewal to unrelated legislation and get it passed "under the radar": the bill to allow current and retired LEOs to carry nationwide and this class-action bill. Well, the LEO carry bill was passed by the Senate a couple days ago (already passed by the House) without anything about the AWB, and the conference committee won't be adding it since it appears in neither bill. Now Frist has prevented a renewal of that odious abomination to the class action legislation, so the WBOTW is shiite outta luck. With only about 20 legislative days left until 9/14, this will need a straight up or down vote...and even if it passes in the Senate, it isn't going to even get out of committee in the House.

Rejoice, for soon we shall be free!

I have been telling all the naysayers for years now that the AWB will expire. With Republican control of both the Presidency and Congress, there was never really much of a chance for the AWB to be extended, especially with GWB having to carry Florida, Ohio and Penn 60 days after its expiration to get reelected.

I am a natural optimist though a lot of pessimistic people on this board would have you believe that all firearms will be banned soon and the Republicans want to ban them just as much as the Democarts. Its not something I have ever believed and its something I refuse to believe till it atually happens. That being said keep your memberships to the NRA current, keep writing your pols, even if they suck, keep voting and most of all keep the faith.

So how come Frist is now playing parlimentary games where as in the past he was deaf, dumb, and blind. Why is his spine now stiffening?

Might be cause when someone shoves a big boot up your butt then twists their ankle to the right, you go to the right as well..??????

Excellent news, just strengthens my admiration for Frist.

He's the only doctor in the Senate...the only one truly qualified to speak on medical issues, bioterrorism, etc.

I remember roughly a year ago, Frist pulled over at an accident scene and offerred his services to the EMTs. He left later on, not having used the incident as a PR stunt. Perhaps this is just relatively speaking on my part: where I live people(rich yuppies) are generally inconsiderate. Frist, on the other hand, stopped, offerred his skills/help, and didn't make a huge deal out of it, just did what he was asked to do and then left. Both the act of making the stop, and then remaining humble/nonchalant throughout is worth quite a bit in my book. The guy just did his job, no more and no less.

Don't get me wrong. I admire Frist as a man and a doctor. One of the stories I've repeatedly heard is Frist during senate vacations will pack up medical supplies in his plane and at his cost will fly to a foreign country where he engages in medical missionary activities. The stories are anecdotal because Frist won't talk about it.

Behavior consistent with my understanding and evaluation of the man.

However, in his position of senate majority leader I question his seemingly mild and inoffensive stance. I would have preferred a little more combat, but then again I'm not the majority leader and Bush is not my boss.
