Ahwatukee gem salesman foils armed robbery

Tribune
June 28, 2005

A precious-gem salesman foiled a would-be robbery Monday when he drew a large-caliber gun and shot two masked men inside an Ahwatukee Foothills jewelry store.

"He immediately grabbed his gun and began firing," said Phoenix detective Tony Morales.

One suspect collapsed in the middle of the street after the 12:45 p.m. incident inside Loretta’s Ahwatukee Jewelers, 3626 E. Ray Road, police said. He was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix in serious condition with a leg wound.

"He was lying there, in the middle of the street, screaming," said witness Dan Serfilippi, 17, of Ahwatukee Foothills.

Police were searching for the other wounded man, going door to door through the Mountainside Apartment complex across the street.

Ray Road was closed between 39th Street and Ranch Circle North for several hours.

"We need to find this guy, he’s very dangerous and he needs medical attention," Morales said.

The man was described as black, about 6 feet tall and dressed in dark clothes.

The gem salesman was not identified.

In the parking lot in front of the jewelry store, a silver semiautomatic handgun was found, believed dropped by one of the robbers as he fled, police said.
