From the National Shooting Sports Foundation's newsletter called "Bullet Points."

RECOMMENDATION TO END SHOOTING PROGRAM IN AZ . . . The Arizona Board of Regents Audit Committee has recommended that the Arizona 4-H Shooting Sports Program be terminated as of Jan. 1. Arizona's 4-H Youth Development Program is part of a national program administered by the country’s land-grant universities. If the termination is implemented, the University of Arizona Police Department would confiscate all university-owned guns and associated gear connected with this program for disposition, reports the NRA. University president Peter Likins has temporarily suspended the decision to end the program, which would affect middle- and high-school students. The NRA is urging concerned citizens to contact members of the audit committee, the university president and state legislators, asking them to reverse the recommendation, and the NRA-ILA Web site provides those individuals’ contact information.

Folks in AZ, or even outside of AZ, contact the appropriate AZ authorities at

Have they offered a reason? In general, that particular organization has been quite supportive of shooting sports. Heck, they have a range not 2 miles from my house...

Here is what is said about the decision on the NRA-ILA site.

"This decision is based completely on the State of Arizona Board of Regents Audit Committee recommendation."

And here's something else just down the page.

"University of Arizona President, Peter Likins, has temporarily suspended the decision to end Arizona’s 4-H Shooting Sports Program. However, to ensure the University does not move forward in the future to terminate 4-H Shooting Sports, program coordinators are asking for comments from concerned Arizona citizens in support of the program. "

The shooting sports in Arizona need our help.

I've already sent off an email to the AZ Board of Regents telling them that I am a former competitor in 4-H Shooting Sports, that I am a college faculty member and a certified rifle coach, and that I am currently coaching a collegiate club team.

Another point that will score with academic types is as follows:

1) Shooting is one of the few truly coed sports.

This a huge Title IX sport on the collegiate level.

Without skills developed by 4-H shooting programs, there are a lot of women who don't get the shooting scholarships they are currently on.

For those of you who sent emails to the U of AZ board of regents, or who were wondering about what happened, here's an email I got this evening.

Thank you for sharing your perspective regarding the continued operation of the UA 4H Shooting Education Program. Regents and university administrators have received a substantial volume of communications from individuals who support the continued operation of the program.

The Audit Committee met Friday, December 23, 2005, and confirmed that the 4H Shooting Education Program not be discontinued. We asked that President Likins continue his evaluation and review ways to continue the program. We have asked him to review all aspects of the program but particularly the safety issues raised in a recent Audit report. We are particularly interested in discussing and evaluating the appropriateness of university ownership of guns. And we are especially concerned that any changes not adversely impact the archery-training component.

On behalf of ABOR’s Audit Committee, please know that we appreciate your interest in the continued operation of the Shooting Education Program in your community.

Good win for now -- however, take heed:

We are particularly interested in discussing and evaluating the appropriateness of university ownership of guns.

This is a red flag warning that left-wing anti-gunners are still at work.

the campus Women's groups would want self defense training.

My experience with most Campus Women's groups is that their idea of self defense extends as far as handing out rape whistles. Its hard to finder a louder oponent of gun ownership. It seems that a lot of University groups like to indoctrinate their subjects into believing that guns are the tools of oppressors, rather than of the oppressed. This runs completely counter to the original intent of feminism, which really is dead. Most University based women's groups are more concerned with being anti-male, than being pro-female.

It always struck me as strange that people would notice that oppressors often have guns and decide to try and stop oppression by restricting guns. The thing that always struck me is the oppressed never have guns. I'm guessing that is why they are the oppressed.

Exactly my experience too. I got ostracized for suggesting that boxcutters would be more effective than whistles.

University concerned about owning firearms. Sounds like some overly concerned lawyers trying to justify their continued employment by the University. Or, they talked to the law school, and found one of those liberal anti-gun types who is using liability (a buzz word that catches the attention of those who worry about money) to eliminate the firearms.
