Would-be hammer robber gets nailed

A Phoenix storeowner called police after a man tried to rob him. But Nasir Attar said he waited to make the call after he pulled out a gun, chased the suspect down and fired two warning shots into the air.

When the suspect walked into a Food Mart Wednesday morning, Phoenix Police Department spokesman John Humphrey said the suspect walked into the store with a hammer in his pants. But it seems the hammer got stuck.

"He was trying to pull something out but couldn't do it," Humphrey said.

Not wanting to be outmatched, Attar said he pulled out his gun.

"When he locked the door, I had my gun pointed at him," Attar said.

The suspect then allegedly turned around and tried to make a run for it, but Attar wasn't finished with him just yet. Attar chased the suspect across the parking lot, firing two rounds as he ran.

Eric Donzella heard the shots and ran to help.

The suspect was tackled in a yard and eventually taken into custody.

And while police don't want anyone to fire shots out in the open, luckily for Attar, the attempted robbery had a happy ending.
