Went out to the shotgun range, for the first time in 2 years, today. shot a few rounds of skeet to try and get used to the "new to me" 870 i bought.

found out a few things, mainly that i'm WAY out of shape with regard to stamina and strength in the areas exercised by shotgunning. not surprising since i've not been lifting 8-10 pound objects to shoulder height and holding there, on anything resembling a regular basis. in close to 6-7 years now (the 4 rounds of SG per stage of CAS shooting don't put a patch on a round of skeet, and i haven't done THAT in near two years).

secondly that i WAS spoiled by all those AA featherlites i shot during my "CAS crazies". those 1-1/8oz field loads made me remeber the first time i ever shot a 12ga in my life,

the solution to teh above two things is the same, the solution touted here on an almost hourly basis, BA/UU/R.

lastly and the one that i want to put in front of "those who know more than I" is that during the course of my being coached by one of the resident "nice guy who knew more than me at least" types, the gentleman helping me asked, "so what kinda choke you have in that thing?" "Modified, the same one that comes in it from the factory", his reply was "well, that's going to make it harder for you to break em... I'd suggest switching to a Cylinder or Skeet, if i were you, that way your pattern will be a little larger and that'll reduce your frustation some."

well what do YOU guys think, am i making things hard on my self here? or is swapping out for a more open choke not going to help out much??
and IF swapping for less constriction will help which should i look to get and who from??? (remember Rem 870 so i know what "pattern" of choke tube to get)

thanks for your time and advice guys :)

P.S. only mildly related (through relating to guns that will be used for skeet, belonging to members of my household) anyone know if there is a Speed wrench made to fit 28ga Remchokes?? found out that a rem-choke wrench with two "nubs" filed off fits the tubes used in Khan shotguns.

I'm thinking you might be able to get some nice knurled chokes for that from Colonial Arms .. I got some there for my Baikal and am sure they do chokes for most ''breeds''.

Certainly ... I reckon open tubes do help .. and I am novice compared to the Dave McC's of this place. Only time I think I feel I want a tighter choke is with- say - a late shot on #1 from high house ... but then I need to learn to get on bird quicker!

Fear not ... Dave, Trapper, sm et al ... will probably be along to give real advice!:)

Remington's skeet tube actually is a hair larger than bore diameter. Cylinder is about bore diameter, as it should be, and IC runs about 10POC. Any of these should work for skeet.

If you have just one Modified tube, I suggest picking up one more open and one tighter. The classic set of IC,Mod and Full makes sense, and so does Skeet, Mod and Extra Full to spread them out a mite.

YMMV, of course, but I use Full for trap and wobble. I could use Modified or even Light Modified. Skeet gets either Cylinder or a Skeet tube. SC, I could change every shot like some folks, but I just screw in an IC or Light Mod and leave it alone.

When in doubt, go with more choke or more load.

tighter choke is with- say - a late shot on #1 from high house
Gee Chris the idea is to hit it in flight...not after it hits the ground in itty bitty pcs..."late"....we are going to have a serious talk my friend. :D

Oh my ...my side is hurting...hold on...ouch....okay I'm back - I still have pains tho'...ROFL

Detritus -

Yes the more open choke is an advantage in skeet. As you recall from any given station the center stake is 21 yds. The targets are flying over said stake. So I use a basically a cyl bore if I use my SX 1 with the .735 external knurled choke tube.

The factory IC will still be "tight" you can cheat and open the pattern by using the bargain brand dove and quail loads as these have chilled shot. Chilled shot deforms and therefore a more open pattern than target loads with hard shot.

A skeet choke is recommended. Carlsen, Colonial...

Yes that stamina dealie does sneak up. You will get it back doing correct gun mounts each day. I'd start with 25 and work up. Might as use imaginary targets and dry fire.

Don't forget we suggest light loads, they have some 7/8 and 1 oz loads now they didn't before...pattern the gun of course for 21 and 25 yds and use the load the gun likes.

Just stuff you let slip your mind from being inactive...mounting and dryfire will do a lot of good, toss Skeet choke in and you'll easily hit 20 /25 no sweat first time this combo is used.

Then we'll be shooting your hat...

:)

are the remington made "Skeet" rem-chokes decent??

Is there reason Not to get the remington branded tubes?
or is it a case of "if you're gonna buy, buy the best ya can NOW, instead of later"??

that thought just occured to me. ;)

Just chipping back in ... re chokes ...... I am sure the Rem chokes are just fine but ... being a lazy sob myself .. like the convenience of knurled ... no tool needed, except MK 1 forefinger and thumb!

That was main reason I suggested Colonial as a way to go.

I agree with Chris...that or he agrees with me...whatever. <Gong> Did I learn Chris that? :D

I prefer the extended knurled chokes.

1) it protects the muzzle if the muzzle has a tree , trap house or somesuch run up and hit it.

2) NO friggin wrench to keep up with.

We have had some problems with Rem chokes NOT being concentric. So many of us prefer the Colonial, Carlsons, Briley....etc.

Some of these are lead shot only, some are steel shot compatible.[Read : one can use lead or steel ] I recommend getting the steel compataible. IN the event you visit a range that mandates steel shot only. The Rem factory Mod is steel approved btw.

Briley is good , but pricey. I would consult with whichever company and let them help assist with what you want with the make and bbl.

Also many of the better companies mentioned above will go in .05 increments.

I used Nu-Line back when I did my '74 Winchester, steel approved, extended Knurled, .05 increments. I have not checked to see if they do they stock one for the 870. One of these days I need to do this myself.

I probably have put and easy 100k through my .735 choke alone...so yeah they work, they hold up.

I don't have the links to the choke sites handy- sorry.

DON'T buy Remington chokes, they are a crap shoot at best.

Buy Hastings (my preferred choke maker), Briley, Colonial, or some other quality maker. I own half Hastings and half Briley, not a bad choke in the lot.

with Briley being in town up there, you'd THINK that i could find a deal on em in houston... WRONG

wish i could afford them, but alas, guess it's a case of checking to see what hastings and Colonial have that appeals to me....

other than the websites of the various makers, what are the good (best) places to buy these on line??

i know Midway sells Briley and Hastings at least, but is there someplace that has a better selection and/or pricing??

thanks for the input guys.

I've bought 7 Remchokes in the last year, 6 with the LC barrels and a Light Modified. 2 were off. That's a dud rate of 28%.

The brands mentioned are good. Carlson's are excellent and less expensive than Briley.

Two questions

First off, anyone heard of/have experience with "Trulock" brand tubes?? midway sells them at a soprt of middle of the pack price and they make a extended knurled Skeet choke, a style not listed amoung the Hastings chokes midway has.

second, what's the diff in chokes marked "Skeet 1" and "Skeet 2"???

Skeet 1 is regular skeet, a little bit tighter than cylinder bore. Skeet 2 is a bit tighter than improved cylinder.

Cylinder
Skeet 1
Improved cylinder
Skeet 2
Light modified
Modified
Improved Modified
Full
Extra full
Assorted turkey chokes

I think I got them all right.
:D
