This weekend my friend and I went to the rifle Small Arms Firing School at Camp Perry. This has got to be the best government funded program out there lol. Saturday we spent the first half of the day in an auditorium learning about sighting in, firing positions, use of a sling, safety, etc. I felt the speakers did a really good job and they had good graphics in the powerpoint presentation. The second half of the day we went to the 200yd range. My instructor was a reservist from Florida. He was friendly and also did a great job explaining things. We got five rounds to sight in, then did a 10 round slow fire string in 10 minutes and finally a 10 round rapid fire string in 60 seconds - all prone. My only complaints were that I would have liked more than just a few minutes to find a good shooting position - I haven't shot prone since Boy Scout camp and wanted to try a couple different body and arm positions. Also, after spending a good amount of time explaining how to use a sling in the morning, the rifles all had just a nylon web strap. Sunday we started with 15rds slow fire prone in 15min, five of which were sight in shots. Next was ten rounds rapid fire prone starting from a standing position, then ten rounds rapid fire sitting starting from standing, and lastly ten rounds slow fire standing. I scored 298 out of 400. Not a great score but I was pleased with what I had learned and that I was able to knock out a few 10's at that range. Definitely worthwhile. I'll be back for the pistol class if they hold it on a weekend next year.
