So, I took my really pitted Model 17-3 Smith apart and...

painted it with Ford and Oldsmobile engine block paint as an experiment. I wanted to see if I could cheap out on refinishing it.

Tomorrow, I will be taking it apart again, stripping it and starting over.

I am hiding my face on purpose out of shame!

:what: Oh Lord, I've gone blind...

I'm pretty sure the paint can suggests "do not paint with a snootfull" on it somewhere. Mike

Oh, so THAT's a "blued" gun ...!!

Sorry, but you really blue it with that one ...

Actually I was wondering where the cylinder release was for a moment before I realized it was a mirror shot -- and then I went blind.... :D

Did the buildup of paint affect the fit and function?
Most of the spray and bake finishes on the gun market go on pretty thin, but I wonder about engine block paint.

I'm goint to have to sell my 17-8. I'll never be able to look at it again without bringing back this awful image.

Jim Watson>>>

Yes, it did initially. I was careful to spray a light coat, and it was amazing to me that the tolerances are so tight that it did make it feel mushy and slow.

I spent this evening using MEK to remove the paint, came off like dead skin after a bad sunburn. The paint turned out not to be very durable, which im sure is why products like Duracoat are popular. I wanted to experiment, and I did. Experiment failed!

During reassembly I foolishly over-tightened the thumb nut screw on the bolt and stripped it. So, I have two new parts on the way from Numrich and once its back together, I'll post some pics of it back in its original guise. Not sure if I'm done yet though...
