Last night the local affiliate of CBS "Kmov channel 4" ran a typical sensationalized story complete with television commercials as lead ins all evening claiming that Felons were being allowed to legally carry guns .

It seems they dug up the fact that the Missouri Conservation Department doesn't require background checks or something to purchase Deer hunting Tags and according to the story last year there were 2,754 felons sharing the woods with hunters .

Now while it may be a logical assumption that they are hunting with guns that is all it is is an assumption .

You see here the methods used for Deer include Crossbows "which may only be used in the firearms portion of our Deer season" and archery even in gun season . But here is the catch , if you choose to use say a compound or longbow in gun season you must still buy a firearms permit as Archery season is suspending during gun and Archery Tags are invalid .

There are dozens of Conservation areas with great Deer hunting that only allow Archery methods due to their proximity to homes and roads etc .

What bothered me the most is they interviewed not only a local politician but a spokeswomen for the Conservation Dept. and neither seem to even know the hunting regulations regarding the situation .

Now the Politician of course sees a need to close up this "loophole" despite the fact there wasn't a shred of evidence that Felons were indeed hunting with guns .

It isn't just attacks on gun ownership of certain guns they are satisfied with despite their claims of not taking away hunting guns , it is every conceivable thing they can find a way to ruin that we so enjoy no matter what they have to do and say .

Also remember that since the GCA 1968 only covers firearms, and most states define muzzleloaders as antique firearms or antique weapons, a felon is legally allowed to hunt with those as well. A good question would be how many places are robbed with bow toting criminals? OR How many places are robbed by suspects brandishing flintlocks? (Yes I know cap-n-ball revolvers and inlines are also considered muzzleloaders..., but the silly reporters and politicians don't have to be told that!)

More likely it is just a "news" crew trying to make a big story out of something less, and politicians and beauracrats just doing what they do.
I don't know about MO but the firearm deer season has an estimated $475 million impact on state/local economy here in Illinois. Why would they want to screw with that?
A couple years ago we had DNR all over here trying to catch one convicted felon with a firearm because they knew he had firearm deer tags. They got him for illegally baiting and outfitting without a license but no gun charges. I think they would rather catch them and fine them (more $$$!), than prevent them from committing violations.

You can tell who the hunters are that are felons when firearms season comes in because they are using crossbows. It doesn't bother me that they can hunt using archery equipment, but that isn't the issue. This is another case of someone trying to make something of nothing. I'd say the reporters are probably well aware of the laws, but chose to put their own spin on it and only use the interviews with those who are ignorant on the subject.

It has been said this country is an insane asylum run by the inmates, and having a spokesperson for the Conservation Dept. that doesn't even know enough about the game laws to give an educated answer is another example of people in office that don't know their hind end from a hole in the ground. People that have no business in leadership are put into positions these days for their speaking skills and looks rather than knowledge. These people are not of any benefit to the people they represent. But we see that in every aspect of government.

I know this topic is about the attack on hunting, but BigOo1 is right when he says:

It is indicative of the war that is going on in every aspect of our lives to reduce our rights and freedoms. People don't like to hear it, but you might as well get ready, because it is going to get worse, and whether we can hunt legally or not is going to be the least of our worries. Better have a place to hide your guns so you can kill something to eat, because the time is coming when prices on gas and everything else will be so high you won't be able to afford to get to work to buy any food. The oil rich nations are threatening to quit accepting the US dollar right now. The rest of the world hates us (for many reasons) but the pressure is on for us to have to pay the same amount for a gallon of gas that the Europeans have to pay. Just another jab to get us in line to be on par with the rest of the world economically, and politically. (That goes hand in hand, you know) And with the political shifts the ball comes full circle right back to this topic: Taking away the freedoms we enjoy.

It might be a few years before this comes to pass, but let me tell you, it could happen over night. That is no joke. If the right people get into office, they could sell us all out in a day. It may already be too late, but we have to continue in our fight for our rights, keeping our guns and our hunting heritage included. Everyone needs to get educated on what is going on, who is who, and vote accordingly. When a spokesperson for your cause evidently has no clue it is time to let the proper people know we want them replaced. One of the big problems is, there is no accountabilty anymore, and everyone else turns a blind eye to it. We are all guilty to some extent.

Not so. For one thing a felon is not allowed to possess black powder, a BP substitute or caps.

Have a link? Not really a challenge, but if it is true I know this felon that wants to hunt and I would like to see the law so I can show him.

Here's a Q&A section from the State of Washington regarding part of the subject.

Q. Can a felon have a muzzleloader for hunting?
A. If the felon has had his/her rights restored through the court of sentencing, yes the felon may use a muzzleloader to hunt. If the felon has NOT had his/her rights restored through the court, then the felon may NOT possess a pistol, shotgun, muzzleloader, or other firearm. The felon can hunt with archery gear but not firearms.

Could we have the source please, for I knew they could not be in possession of "fixed ammo", but have never been told nor read about anything prohibiting antique firearms, nor black powder or substitutes.

Thanks
