I took a long-range shooting course. I thought I was clever, showing up with a Stanley rolling toolbox. Then they told us to climb stairs over and over.

What's a good, sturdy backpack for this kind of work? Needs to hold ammo, snacks, water, some tools, and so on. Let's say 200 rounds of .308. I would want to be able to shove a bagged rain jacket in there, too. The usual items for prone shooting. Also, I want to be able to attach a rear bag and one or two front bags or put them inside.

It can't be black. You have to be nuts to carry a black bag on sunny days.

It doesn't have to hold a rifle. I have a mat.

Seems like everything on Amazon is LO FAT and MAI DUNG. Hard to find a real brand.

About 90% of the time when I shoot "field" positions off a backpack it's my Eberlestock X2 hunting daypack:

It's the pack I carry for the majority of my outdoor outings. The metal frame adds some stiffness to the pack when shooting off it.

I also have an Eberlestock "Half Track" that I've used for a couple LR matches that worked pretty well. It's about a "Day Pack +" sized and carried everything including tripod and spotting scope. There's enough lashing points to also tie down a mat. Tough as nails, little heavy, and with the molle on the pack a bag rest can be mounted easily. Eberlestock makes a rifle rest that attaches easily to packs.

The Eberlestock stuff is expensive, but IF yous search and watch sales you can often find some pretty good deals.

Another thought is maybe a regular range bag with a shoulder strap?
