Saw a S & W M64-1 today that was marked on the backstrap "UT AUSTIN". I'm guessing that it's an old police gun used by campus security at the University of Texas, Austin. Anyone know for sure?

Sounds pretty logical.
Likely stamped after purchase. Some were marked for departments by the factory buy that marking is not included in my list of factory marks.

Greeting's All-

Hey RON just think, that gun might have been
in use by the University Of Texas (at Austin) campus
police in 1966, when old Charles Whitman killed all
those innocent's folk's? If you knew for sure, that
shoot'in iron could fetch mega buck's, from some
collector's! :uhoh: :D

Dog gone! I don't know where my mind was at?:uhoh:

College football season is here, and it must be too much!

At any rate, it was discovered during the autopsy, that
Charles Whitman* had a massive brain tumor that caused
him to do all that killing. Heck, he had several firearms
on hand that he didn't even use; and I wonder if they
were destroyed or auctioned off by the City of Austin?

*FootNote: Whitman was a former United States Marine
