The property I hunt was clearcut in 1989. I has gone from barren to briarpatch to thicket to fledgling forest in the last ~20 seasons. We keep a handful of backup rifles in the safe for underprepared guests or if a Plan A gets broken. Most of these safe queens wear irons, a couple have scopes. Unfortunately, as I age, and correspondingly the guest list ages, there is a need for more scoped loaner guns.
Currently, my favorite sighting system in these conditions is a 1.5-5X20mm Vari-X III (same as VX-III now I guess). This would seem an ideal upgrade for the gunsafe queens, but at the same time, buying a half dozen $400 dollar scopes for guns that might get shot 10 times every other year seems a waste. The discussion has gone from "do nothing" to BassPro or Cabelas house brands, base model low power variables or fixed powers.
Is there a quality low fixed or variable power no frills scope to be had, or is "do nothing" probably the best solution?
P.S. Guns calibers: 222, 223, 2 7x57, 2 30-30's, and a 308 (all legal for deer in the state in question). Shots are typically between 25-50 yards.
