backup sights

I have been playing with my AR, put a 16 inch barrel in place of the 20 inch. changed the upper from the carry handle type sight and put on a flat rail, to which I attached a trijicon red dot sight. Now i am wondering if I should put on a rear Iron type sight for back up or just leave the red dot as a stand alone. The trijicon doesnt need batterys, and should therefore not be needed but........

To answer your question, it really depends on what you're setting the AR up for. Judging by the fact that you went with a shorter barrel I'd say you're setting it up as a tactical rifle. Assuming that you're setting it up as a tactical weapon, I'd say yes.

If you are setting it up to shoot squirls then you really don't need it.

Price is a thing to consider here, they go for a couple hundred for a set if not each piece alone.

it makes no sense to me why folks wouldn't have buis, i have them on my ar. if for some reasons the batteries in your optic go out, or the optic becomes damaged, etc, you need a go to sight that will be there when and if you need it. not saying that you will. also it is great to go old school at the range every now and then and use those irons.

Always. I put a BUIS on one of my AR long before the EOTech sat on top. I practice with the irons more than I do the EOTech.

BUIS are like spare tires, fire extinguishers, and CPR training. You might need it once or twice, but if you dont have it when you need it, a bad situation just got worse.

Decent BUIS arent hard to find, Cav Arms makes a fixed A1 BUIS that sells for about 60 bucks. YHM offers a simular one, however it has the A2 knob. They also offer flip sights for less than $100 (edit: Just ckecked the YHM site, the flip sights are on sale for $76).

I really like using a YHM front flip sight/gas block (that replaces the original front sight tower) coupled with a Matech PADS BUIS.

It's a combination that's hard to beat when used with an Eotech HWS (either the AA or N unit) on any flattop upper.

Yes, I will not mount any type of scope on one of my rifles unless I can utilize the irons. I have the DPMS gas block fold down front and a rear, cost less than 100 bucks for the setup. The only issue I have with this configuration is that I have no sling swivel on the front, system works well with a single point sling however. Bill
