Bad Experience With Waikiki Indoor Range

I just got back this afternoon from my Waikiki family vacation. It was my second visit to the area. Very touristy, liberal area, but a great (to me)vacation destination. Anyway, before this visit, I discovered the Waikiki Indoor Range online and planned to stop in for a visit. I had researched the place a little and had heard from more than one source that it was basically a Japanese tourist trap. I had read on their website, though, that you can rent an mp5, so I had to take the chance.

I went a little after 10 am (I was the only customer there) on Thursday, July 17. The way it works is you pay first and then you are cleared to go back to the range to shoot. So, you don't actually get to see the gun you are renting until you have paid for it. There are posters behind the counter which are supposed to represent the gun in question (I assumed anyway). A few of the weapons they list are: m16, AK47 and, my interest, the mp5. I asked the Asian woman behind the counter if Hawaii allowed Class III dealers (ie full auto) and she stated that all of the weapons were semi-auto. That should have been a big red flag. After all, how can you rent an m16 if everything is semi-auto? Anyway, the picture for the mp5 looked great (HK, mp5 barrel length, etc). Even if it was semi-auto only, I was excited about shooting this weapon. I filled out the paperwork, showed my drivers license and paid the outrageous sum of $45 plus tax for 20 rounds of 9mm.

Next, I walked through the door to the range and was given protective glasses and a list of safety rules. I did not want to be one of those "know it all guys" about shooting or safety, so I kept my mouth shut and followed all instructions as they were presented to me. I was led over to the range where I learned that my mp5 was actually an HK94 clone with a fake suppressor barrel shroud. Rather than argue, ask for a refund or anything like that, I accepted the loss, shot my 20 rounds and then left. I had to ask for hearing protection prior to shooting (range guy had ears, but forgot to get them for me). Range guy then had the gall to ask me for a tip before I left. Oh yeah, they wouldn't accept my 30% off internet coupon (from their website) because I didn't purchase a gun rental package (even though there is nothing on the coupon about having to rent any type of package). All in all, a pretty lousy experience.

My main complaint is not shooting what is advertised. If you say m16, provide an m16. If you say mp5 and show a picture of an mp5, then provide an mp5. Otherwise, state what you are getting (well-worn hk94 clone). Thanks for letting me vent.

Shops like this give the pro 2A folks a bad name and a worse image. :cuss:

Maybe a complaint to the Hawaiian State Attorney General's Office would be in order. False advertising and all that stuff. It may not get charges filed, but I'll bet they at least look into it. An anti-gun state like that would probably take after a gun shop like bees take to honey! :neener: :)

Incidents like this really chap my hide! :fire:

You should have listened to the guys telling you it was a Japanese tourist trap. The Japanese tourists have heard of "M-16" and "MP-5" but aren't going to know what an "AR-15" or "SP 89" are.

Sorry it sucked.

When you're the only shooting game in town, you can do what whatever you want. Or in other words, "Mahalo Haole, leave your money on da counter and get your pink okole ouddah here Braddah!" Try complaining in Hawaii to anyone not a local or Kamaaina and see what that gets you: wiki-wiki stinkeye!

Next time spend your vacation in Las Vegas. They have ranges that will rent you the real thing.

Went to that place as a gimic kinda back when I was stationed on Oahu. It sucked then and it still sucks now. Like you said, Japanese tourist trap. Or people from places that have never seen guns before.

Not to be rude, but in my opinion, you're as much to blame as they are for your bad experience. The second I got in there and they told me that the gun were all semi-auto and not FA as they seem to advertise, I would have said thanks, but no thanks, and walked out the door.

Failing that - If they walked me to the range and gave me a HK94 clone (or anything else that wasn't the MP5 I paid to shoot) I'd say thanks but no thanks, gimme my money back, and walked out the door.

Whether you paid up front or not, you still have rights as a consumer - and by letting them jerk you around, you did them a favor. If we as a shooting community (and as comsumers in general) would stand up to dishonest businesses like this one, instead of just "going with the flow", we might not have so many dishonest businesses in the first place.

Hey Shaky J:

No good deed goes unpunished.

As you described all of this, it was like you got caught up in the range's TWILIGHT ZONE.

I sure hope you laughed out loud when the fellow asked you for a tip. You could always apologize and say you had lost your wallet.:what:

;)

basically a Japanese tourist trap

There's your problem. The Waikiki Indoor Range caters primarily to rich Japanese tourists who have never held a gun that shoots more than 6mm plastic pellets before. Nothing wrong with that in my estimation; just understand that it's not exactly a nexus of the gun culture. It's a way to extract money from people by showing them something vaguely exotic at a minimum of overhead, a maximum of profit and a minimum of actual exotic stuff.

Actually, Waikiki is like that generally. Unless you have an Imelda Marcos-esque shopping habit, I can't really recommend the place. I suppose there is that military museum way over on the Ewa side of things, and a few good restaurants.

There's a much better range over by Hanauma Bay, although they don't do rentals.
