I've recently picked up a great early 90's Baikal IJ 70 Makarov. I've just gotten a fixed rear sight to replace the adjustable rear sight. It's a direct replacement and it's sold by the fine folks at http://www.gunpartswarehouse.com/makarov.htm

My question is what is the correct way to remove the pin on the factory sight? Do I just need to find the right size punch and pop it out? The smallest punch I have is 1.5 mm and that does fit on the outer edge of the pin, but I think I need something small enough to fit inside the hole of the pin. Those familiar with this gun will understand what I mean.

Any help on how to do it and what size punch I need would be appreciated.

I ended up cutting the rear sight 'flap' into two pieces and then working each half off of the pin. My initial goal was to save the factory rear sight but there was just no way to remove it without risking damage to the slide.

You remove the elevation adjusting screw then drive out the small roll pin on the front, the sight will just lift off. I used a 1/16" punch to remove the pin.

After removing the elevation screw, I used an old drill bit as a punch. It came right out.
