Anyone tried Ballistol as a patch lube? Diluted or full strength? I use Bore BUtter when hunting so that the lube doesn't creep into the powder charge. Is there anything to confirm wheter or not a dampened patch with a liquid lube will creep into the powder charge so much as to cause a POI change?

Mineral oil, or Ballistol, which is a mineral oil based lubricant, makes an excellent patch lube when diluted between 4:1 and 8 or 9:1, water to Ballistol. The patches should be allowed to dry after being saturated with the mixture.

As with any component in the system, one should shoot groups with each mixture to find the one that works best with your combination of powder, ball and gun barrel.

I would think that if you let the patch dry you would end up with straight Ballistol as a residue. So why bother to mix it with water for a patch lube, just use it straight.

Because there's a very large body of evidence from thousands of shooters that shows the water/Ballistol mixture is significant in getting accurate shooting.

The mixture determines how much 'pure' Ballistol there is on the patch when it's dry. And that matters.

I am one of Dutch's very satisfied customers - the best $15 I've ever spent anywhere on anything. I've never met anyone who's tried his system that wasn't both amazed and very pleased with the results.

I'll put a couple of dozen patches in a baggie and then add about two teaspoons of Ballistol, let them soak. I store them in a small tin in my bag. I have not had a problem with the Ballistol and powder charge, but I'm just a paper shooter so the rifle is not loaded that long. I would think the patch would have to be really wet to effect the powder.

I do much the same as "Madcrate", but use a empty "shoe polish can" its about the right size for .44 to .50 cal patches.

I make my own patch and wad lube using a good dab of bore butter, some parafin wax, and a splash of Ballistol - melt it and mix up good, soak my wads/patches in them, set them out and let them dry. It's worked pretty good so far.
