Baltimore will have a new Gun Offender registry starting in a few months. Another stupid law that will do little, if anything to reduce crime in Baltimore, but makes Mayor Dixon looks like she is doing things.

Baltimore has become the second city in the nation to establish a gun offender registry. It requires convicted gun offenders to register their address and report to police.

The goal is to make city streets safer. The streets of Baltimore have been riddled with gun violence, lives taken by gun-toting criminals. But with the signing of the bill that establishes a registry for gun offenders, Mayor Sheila Dixon and police are fighting back. Dixon says, "I want to make Baltimore the toughest place in the city on gun crimes."

I'll just add what a moron Dixon is! Baltimore IS the CITY you idiot! I guess she meant toughest place in the state, or nation. Remember she was not elected to the office, but assumed the Mayor's position when the former mayor became the Governor.

Acting Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld says, "We will put more bad guys in jail and affect the violent crime rate in the city."

Not sure how a registry is going to reduce violent crime or put more bad guys in jail

Officials say the registry is a proactive approach to keeping track of gun offenders. City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says, "It sends a strong message to those who want to terrorize the streets with illegal weapons... If you commit a crime with a gun in Baltimore, we will find you."

The gun offender registry will take effect in 3 months and be accessible to the public. It will require all convicted gun offenders in the city to register their information with police. Upon conviction, an offender will have to register their name, address, and photograph with police, and report to authorities every 6 months for 3 years. Failure to do so will lead to a fine or jail time.

The gun registry will be accessible to the public much like the sex offender registry so you can know if a gun offender lives near you.

I'm sure criminals are quaking in terror already.

The real question is how long it will take the neo-aristocrats of Baltimore to think to force law-abiding firearms owners to register with the police and check in from time to time.

Dixon is a loudmouthed city councilwoman who became mayor by default when an equally useless mayor O'Malley became Governor. I haven't lived in Md for 5 years and that woman is just annoying today as she was then.

They're making the assumption that 'gun offenders' do their crimes on a recurring basis, and that their acts are randomly applied.

If there is enough shootings in one day scattered throughout the city, they will have to check everyone registered in their database to see where they were at the time of the shooting and if they had a connection with the 'victims'.

Yeah, a list will stop crime, where cops and laws and jails can't. Dream.on you Baltimore Bozos.

not much different than the sex offender list. if nothing else, it does give people an opportunity to know who might be living enxt door to them that they might want to avoid.

personally, i think every violent offender should be put in the registry. people should know just what political correctness has unleashed on us.

From the original article:

What folks fail to realize is that Baltimore has a law on the books that calls for a five year minimum sentence for a conviction of a handgun viaolation. So for the next three years after a conviction the offenders address should be either Baltimore, Jessup, Hagerstown or Crespatown. (State prision locations.)

What a waste!

and IBTL.

Hmmmm....

So I can check to see if my neighbor is a rapist, if he illegally used a gun, but I can't see if he is a murderer. If we insist on these stupid lists, why not make it for all felons?

Personally, I think society would be better off with a bouncing-check offender list.

They used to have one in this area! Years ago bounced checks were a huge problem for local merchants so they banded together, and with police and state's attorney help they made a combined list of offenders that they would not cash checks for. Made a big difference. At one time just about every store in town that took checks required a thumb print. It made proving just who wrote the bad check a lot easier.

Doubtful you would see such cooperation from the authorities these days.

Years ago when Kings County, CA welcomed two, then later a third prison being built in the county, everyone was happy there would be thousands of new jobs and the economy would prosper. People later started wondering where all the ex-convicts were coming from that were settling down in Kings County.

I was kinda under the impression that most, if not all gun crimes are felonies. IF thats the case, and you're a felon, they you're already "Registered" as a felon, that is precluded form firearms ownership. This law does nothing.

City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says, "It sends a strong message to those who want to terrorize the streets with illegal weapons... If you commit a crime with a gun in Baltimore, we will find you."

Because, you know, just committing a regular old crime isn't any reason to go out and actually FIND the criminals.

This registry is just another tool in the anti's toolbox that they are using to demonize, by proxy, gun owners. Puts us right up there with sex offenders and their registry, don't ya know.

It's really about posturing, demagoguery, and amassing more and more power.

In other words, Maryland politics.

MoM loves us. MoM knows best. Obey your MoM. MoM for President-for-Life!

There are plenty of misdemeanor gun crimes. In your home state of Florida, you can be charged with a misdemeanor for:

  • Open carry
  • Brandishing
  • Leaving a gun with reach of a minor
  • Discharging a firearm in public
  • Being drunk while in possession of a firearm
  • Not putting up proper warning signs in your gun shop
  • Allowing a minor under 16 to possess a firearm
  • Being a minor with a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition in violation of a restraining order
  • Failing to report a gunshot wound
  • Possession of a firearm with an altered serial number

And so on...

I wonder if this has anything to do with Baltimore's soon to be police commisioner Charles Ramsey. He was Chicago PD for 31 years, Chief in D.C. for a few, now he's coming to B-more. We are on pace to break our 1999 record of 300 murders(official murders mind you). Crime has been spiraling out of control for years due to the inept fools that Baltimore keeps electing (even O'malley lost the governors race in every county except for Baltimore city, Montgomery and PG countys{D.C. suburbs} but got enough votes to "represent" everyone). The registrys are useless, all they do is show where people who have already done their time live, they do not show the burglars, thiefs, murderers, or other lowlifes all over, and even if they did, without CC or even a state supportive of SD there is not much that could be done anyway. This is just another useless money pit as treasuries drop deeper into the red, schools are defunded, taxes skyrocket and decent people with the means scramble to PA and VA jumping off of a sinking ship. I am truly saddened by how fast and how bad these pompous idiots can destroy a place I was proud to call home.
