The History Channel here in Taiwan for 4th of July is doing the Band of Brothers TV Marathon. The little caption said something like "BBQ, Hot Dogs, and Storming Normandy." hehehe

How much more American does THAT get??

I was thinking maybe I should email the station and tell them we didn't fight the Germans on 4th of July.. but... naw... I'll leave it as is.

I have studied WWII History all my life, and do not recall any one-day cease fires on July 4, 1941, 42, 43, or 44. I'm sure that somehow, somewhere on those dates, American soldiers, sailors, or Marines were fighting the Germans.!:D OK, enough pickin' on ya, twoblink; thanks for the heads up!:)

Not to mention the Battle of Gettysburg, which had just ended on 4 July 1863.

Tell that to the U.S. Navy which , while not officially at war, was on full war alert in the Atlantic due to U-boat sinkings of U.S. ships well before 12-8-41. Ask the boys on the good Ruben James if they didn't think it was a war. Oh, yeah, they can't answer, because the ship was sunk by a U-boat, before 12-8-41. It was one of the 'incidents' that got Americans wanting to declare war before then. Unfortunately, Congress chose to wait, ignore intellegnece about Japanese plans, and let Pearl Harbor happen. Then there were American airmen in the RCAF and RAF shooting down Luftwaffe planes over Britain in 1940. Yes, the US was not officially at war on 7-4-41, but there were Americans fighting Germans on that date.

I know I shouldn't do this, but...

a. The Reuben James was hit on Halloween, 1941.

b. If you're going to stretch the definition of war to include sneak attacks on nonbelligerants, volunteers fighting in other peoples' wars, etc., then there has never been any cease-fire since Cain slew Abel.

c. Erleichda!

 My goof on the Ruben James . I meant before 12-8-41.

I see your point with (b).;) Although re the US navy pre-Pearl, if you are attacked, you defend, declared war or not.

I do not understand the reference in (c).

I will amend my original statement to: July 4th, 1942, 43, and 44. That should eliminate any fuzzyness on pre- Pearl Harbor holstilites, and prevent any here.:)
