ok so im going right along loading my .243 with 41 grains of h4831 only to realize after about 50 i have been using magnum primers :banghead: do i need to take them all apart...
 
Well, for a definitive answer we'd need the bullet weight, and the brass type.

If you are at least a grain below max load, I'd probably shoot it.

If you aren't- I would probably not.

If I run real low, I'll use mag primers in loads that aren't at max charge- its just a hotter flame, which creates a smidge more pressure. Kinda a waste of more expensive primers, but if its all ya got.......
 
I'm not sure what I would do. You are 1gr under max load, I don't think it would blow up MY .243 and I'm not telling you to try it in yours.

In mine, I would fire one and really check out the pressure signs and then make a determination of what I wanted to do from there.

But that's just me.
 
Here is what you do. Set those rounds aside. Then reduce the charge by 10% and work your way up to it. If you get high pressure before you get there you know not to use them.
 
Are you at the max charge? Were you already getting pressure signs with that load with the regular primer? Would you test ammo loaded a full grain or two higher, using a standard primer? What rifle are you shooting it out of? What other calibers is the action avail in, and what pressures do those calibers run at?

No one's going to tell you to go ahead and shoot 'em like that, but you do have a mind of your own.

I'd load up a ladder using the mag primers. Backing off 10% and back up to your charge in increments. Then go out and test them.
 
I would pull the bullets and start over. You can remove the mag primers and reuse everything.
 
Pull em, you won't waste anything. If you already have the load that works, why fool around trying to use different components. Pull em and prime with standard rifle primers. It's only 50....
 
You could conduct a powder workup using magnum primers and if no sign of overpressure and velocities chrono OK up to your 1 gr below max load ... just a thought.

Cuz he might have another load that works. If he can figure out how to safely test ladder test up to it, then why not?

Rifle brass and primers are pretty reliable in giving pressure signs. As long as you don't skip too many steps on the way up, you should be able to see pressure signs before anything too bad should happen.
 
Yeah ladder up to them.

Heck, you might find that the load is better than what you had before.

Nothing wrong with experimenting, done safely. :)
 
Even though Hodgdon lists a Max charge of 42.0gr H4831 the New Hornady #9 lists a Max charge of 45.5gr under a 100gr bullet. Hornady is listing a starting charge of 42.0gr so that might be a problem but on the opposite end of what you're worrying about. Are you using a Hornady bullet? If so you are well below the Max charge and if it were me, I would shot them. The magnum primer should make up for the 1gr difference in your charge and the starting charge in the Hornady manual.
 
A primer as enough power to level a small city & a mag primer wild take out TX.

As you know I'm kidding. If you want to try a new load it'd be a good reason to but if not just shoot them & be happy.
 
Post #5 is the way to go. I personally would pull the bullets, dumb/lose the powder and slowly back out the primers. That's just me, and just they way I would do it.
 
You could load up a few rounds with standard primers and the same charge to see if they have pressure signs. If none are present, the mag loads should be fine. Personally, I feel that using a mag rifle primer is like adding .3 grains of powder to a given rifle charge. Of course I am probably sorely mistaken. That is just my opinion.
 
Thanks for all the info, i ended up just dismantling and reloading them with proper primers. After alot of thought i decided it would just be best.
