Might be changing the barrel on a 7600 from .270 to .308, and reading thru all the smithing books at the library it doesn't seem overly problematic. But I can't find much of anything on the net or in books about the 760/7600 specifically, of course. The mag is the same for both calibers and the locking lugs are the same, it seems like it would be straight forward with the right tools and a video I found. But I have read that head spacing can be a pain. Is there anything else about changing barrels/caliber on the 7600 specifically that I should know about?

Well, first, I don't think they used the same magazine.

The .270 is a 30-06 length cartridge and used the same magazine for the longer 30-06, 270, 35W, and 280 Rem.

The shorter 308 length used a shorter magazine in .308, , 6MM, & 243.

Not so sure how converting a 30-06 length action to a .308 would work out with the magazine and the ejector.

Comparing a 742(30-06) to a 7600(308) the magazine lengths are the same, the .308 just has a shorter follower and a block in the back. You might be able to use the current mags as is, or worst case buy some short-action mags.
