I'm looking to have the barrel on my mosin nagant cut to about 22" and re crowned.

I went to one local gunsmith and he said he charged a minimum of 100 dollars for this service. even though he did great work, that's about what I paid for the rifle.

what should this service cost? and does anyone in middle Georgia have any suggestions for where I should go?

If that includes resetting the front sight after cutting & crowning the barrel, it doesn't seem unreasonable. Machine time costs money every time you do a set-up and turn the switch on.

You could do it yourself with tools from Brownells.

However, by the time you buy the cutter, the handle, and the caliber specific pilot, you'll have spent $100.

Could still be a good deal, if you can spread the costs among some like minded friends, or you think you might cut & re-face more than one barrel in your lifetime.

Got a drill? That, some valve grinding compound and a brass screw with a large head will give you a serviceable crown.

A friend told me he paid either $50 or $60 I can't remember which to have his done. It's also re blued on the end, but I think it's probably just cold blue.

That Midway tool looks like it would be good for refacing a existing Grand muzzle or similar GI barrel. One that already has that overall profile. I think it would not work so well starting from scratch on a flat face (hack-saw-cut) muzzle. It would require a lot of material removal for those big inside and out side radiuses. Doing it by hand would be tough. In any case, though it looks like it comes with a pilot, you would still need to buy a handle.

The Brownells tool is easy. Cut the barrel with a hacks saw. File it flat with a metal file (if you want). Crown it by hand with the tool (takes about 2 minutes, depending on how straight your saw cut was). Lap the lands & grooves with a brass head wood screw and some fine abrasive compound (if you want). Results in a beautiful target crown.

I still want to know what you are going to use for a front sight after you cut the barrel off??
