I am not very good with photos, but I have attached two shots of pitting on a Spanish Mauser M1916 barrel. The pits became visible with I removed the wood. On the first shot, near to were the front barrel band is, I first wire-brushed the area to make it more visible. The second shot shows a rust spot near the receiver. These are just two areas. The pitting follows the edges of the wood.

Is this gun safe to shoot? The bore looks shiny and pit free. I have seen other postings that said not to worry until the pit is about 1/3 through the barrel.

that pitting isn't too deep to be considered unsafe. its probably at the most .025" deep. it just covers a large area making it look worse that it actually is.

It appears safe to me. However, why dont you let your local gunsmith check it out to be safe?
Yes, I will be checking with another gunsmith for his opinion. My FFL/smith says "you're fine." This forum has a lot of smart people on it, so I thought I'd check. Samco Global also claims: "GOOD: 50% of original metal finish. Dings& dents on wood & metal. May have surface rust & pitting but in safe working condition."
