Whats the shortest length barrel I can get for a rifle or shotgun without anything special?

I THINK It's 16 or 18 inches, but I can't remember. I want a 16 inch Remmington 870 for home defense.

Looking at a FABARM and Benelli too.

well, I'm not sure if this is a federal law, or just a MD state law....but the legal size is 18 In. for shotguns, no less (may just be a state law, not sure). I would recommend the 870 marine magnum myself. 18 Inch Barrel, 8 shot I believe. I also believe it's a "quick shot"....where holding the trigger while pumping will just unload w/o letting off the trigger. I'm not positive if it has that feature or not. If you don't go with the remington, go with the Winchester 1300 defender. I would rather have the 870 though;)

18 on the shotgun, 16 on the rifle.

You can get a 16 inch shotgun, or a 14 or a 6 for that matter, but then you're looking at paying all the extra transfer taxes that keep those weapons out of the hands of criminals who can't afford to pay them.

Okie has it right.

16 inch minimum length for rifle barrels, 18 inch minimum length for shotgun barrels, both have a minimum overall length requirement, as well, which i believe is 26 inches.

You can get any barrel length below that that you wish, but that requires a $200 tax stamp to register your weapon as a Short Barreled Rifle (or Shotgun).

An 18 inch barreled shotgun is an excellent home defense tool, i opted for the 20 inch, personally--5+1 or 7+1 and only adds an inch and a half.

Well then I guess my next question would be this.

How difficult is it to get a class 3 weapon?

I understand that's what short barreled rifles and shotguns are called(along with supressors and full auto).

If it's an easy proccess then I'll get an entry model shotgun(if i can find one) for home defense. I have pretty darn narrow hallways where I live.

Depends on the state you live in... they have varying restrictions on Class III weapons.

If your state allows it, you have to get a Form 4, i believe, complete with finger prints and an FBI background check.
www.subguns.com should be able to provide you with the information you need.
