I have a shotgun with a 26" barrel that I would like to assign to home defense. It has a cylinder choke. Is this barrel too long for the job? Thanks...

I wouldn't purchase one with a barrel that long for that purpose. But it is what you have, use it. I'm not real fond of the shorty 18" barrels. If I were buying something dedicated for that purpose I like 20-22" as ideal. But my current HD shotgun has a 24" barrel. Not perfect, but my shotgun is the 3rd line of defense anyway. I'll grab a handgun 1st and if time a carbine length AR 2nd.

Well, all the "experts" say to hole up in a true home defense situation, so I would say it's not too long. My most likely shotgun wears a 28" barrel.
Tactical is another matter.

It might be a good idea to try walking it through hallways, around corners, etc. in your house. I have an 18.5" for that purpose, and even that feels a little cumbersome with how narrow my hallways are.

Also, a longer barrel should give you a tighter group even with the cylinder choke. Not necessarily a bad thing but something to keep in mind.
