Im looking at a barrel for my thompson pro hunter. The barrel is ported seller said he did it for looks. I have no experiance with a ported barrel I know that it reduces recoil but the cal im looking at doesnt have much of a recoil. What im wondering is how much of the muzzle blast will come back in your face the barrel leanth is 18 in. thanks:confused:

depends on how its ported. If its what Im thinking, a row of 3 or 4 hols on top, or 2 rows on top left and right. you shouldnt get a blast to the face unless you are shooting from the hip but it will be uber loud no matter how ya shoot it.

an 18" ported barrel is going to be a catastrophe - i would steer clear.

i have a couple custom rifles in pedestrian chamberings with barrel lengths from 16-18" and they are significantly louder than their standard length counterparts. both versions are unported.

i'm not totally against porting, but if i were to port a rifle, it would have a barrel length greater than 25".

as to your question about blast to the face, it shouldn't be an issue, even shooting from prone.
