I know of a gunsmith that advertises threading barrels for sporter rifles (bolt guns, mostly) for muzzle devices without removing the barrel and chucking it up on a lathe. I assume that the method used is to insert a dowel/pilot into the bore and index on that, and use a rotating cutter instead of rotating the action - correct?

How prevalent is it to thread barrels without removing them from the action, and how good of a job can be done in this fashion?

Barrel threading

If you are referring to threading the muzzle it can be done without removing the barrel from the receiver or using a lathe. He can use the proper size pilot and a proper size die to thread. If you are referring tp threading the chamber end, the barrel must be removed

Sorry that I was unclear - I am speaking of threading the muzzle end to accept a muzzle device of some kind.

If the lathe is capable of handling the barrel and clearance for the action, there is no reason one can't indicate the barrel in order to thread the muzzle.

Barrel threading

I had rather remove them to thread, but having said that I have done it in a lathe with the barrel in the receiver using a 4 jaw chuck

If the gunsmith has a lathe with a hollow headstock, threading and crowning muzzles is simple. Just stick the barrel through from the back of the headstock, clamp it down, and have at it. A bushing might or might not be needed.

I don't have a lathe, the barrels I've threaded were done with a die and TAT.

Clark,

That looks like a PM1236 with a paper towel under the gearbox. I do the same, Mine leaks too. It's been a good machine though. Is yours doing good work for you?

It did not leak until I tried to break in all the feed gears for the 100 hour oil change, and screwed up the gear shift. A key came loose and I screwed it to the shaft. I did not do the lower gear box gasket right.

The real leakage was from the carriage, after the 100 hour oil change, I over filled it, and it has taken months to leak down to the correct level.

I see that offset gasket, mine seems to be leaking at one of the lower shifter shafts. One ot these days I'll pull it off and see if it's a bad O ring, in ALL my spare time, not a high priority.
