I try to keep up with the laws of the land. However there are so many I often get left behind. I have a 16 inch extendable baton that I purchased at a Martial Arts store. It sits in my room and I do not carry it. I carry a CRKT m16-14z folding knife. The blade is 3.85 inches and does not have an assisted opening device. To my knowledge, this is legal. I have been doing this for many years and police officers have seen the knife clipped on my pocket and have not said anything. To make this less complicated I just want to know the legality of these items. Can I carry the baton? Can I carry this knife? Do I need a smaller knife? Where can I find these laws? Thanks for any info in advance.

DBMF,

The best thing to do is look for the information yourself and then ask if you're not certain of what the law is saying.

Google "knife law" "Levine" "New Jersey"

Go to findlaw.com and find the NJ code and look it up.

You should find that there's no blade length restriction listed in NJ code. There's also no prohibition on assisted openers since they don't have a button or other device in the handle to open them. There is a prohibition for carrying a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Individual minicipalities may have more restrictive regs.
