I purchased a mossberg persuader Sunday and while fondling it, noticed the bead sight screw extends (very, very slightly) into the barrel. If I run my index finger into muzzle I can feel the end of that screw.

Is that normal? TIA

I would return it for exchange. I don't know if that's normal for that particular model, but it's not good.

Take a look at the one you exchange for to make sure it's not a bad run of barrels..

I would demand a refund and buy something other than a mossberg.

I've had mossberg's in the past and absolutely loved them. I know there are other options and that most other manufacturers have caught on to such things as dual slide bars, but I didn't like the safety of the winchesters, the remington's slide didn't "feel" right to me and can't afford the M3 or M4 I'd really like.

It was an impulse buy at academy and they don't do refunds--so, I guess I get to deal with mossberg on this one.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have seen it before in Mossies. It isn't 'normal' in that it shouldn't be there, IMHO it is slipshod QC (quality control) on the assembly line. What you do about it is up to you. You can let the factory deal with it either by fixing it or giving you a different gun, or a refund.

If you want to keep the gun, you can remove the bead (it unscrews) and dress off the end of the threads slightly with a fine (swiss type) file, or other relatively fine abrasive. The trick is to keep the threaded end of the bead flat and not mess up the threads or the bead itself. There are special tools for installing/removing threaded beads that have a chuck- like device to hold the bead, anything you have with a chuck (think power drill) will do to hold the bead while you work on it. Don't use the drill to remove/install/file the bead, of course, just as a vise. Once you shorten it a fraction of a thread turn or so it should be ready to reinstall without protruding into the bore. You should not IMHO have to work on a brand new gun other than giving it a thorough cleaning, but... .

Is the Persuader the PGO (pistol grip only) M500 version? You would be happier and better served with a regular stock if that is indeed the case, IMHO.

lpl/nc (870- it's the 'real thing' among repeating shotguns)

Its a 500a with full synthetic and includes a pistol grip as an option. I tried that, but didn't feel good at all (the reach around for the slide release was not pleasant). The original stock feels too long (well, for moving around corners inside a house--probably great for a typical hunting shotgun). What I'd really like is a pistol grip buttstock, about the same pull length as a European AK. I've also considered an M4 adjustable setup as my soon likes all the big boomers i have, but can't seat the buttstock because he's too little (he's only six).

Ahh well, I'll get it worked out. Thanks again.

Mossberg makes a 'Bantam' length buttstock- don't recall its LOP (length of pull) off the top of my head, but it is factory issue on the 'youth' models. It can be had as an aftermarket accessory too.

Hogue makes an even shorter 'overmolded' shotgun stock, I think they have one for Mossies too. See the respective company web pages, they have info listed... shotguns work a LOT better when they fit properly, and LOP is the first thing that should be fixed. Also, most shooters can easily adjust to a 'too short' stock, while there is little that can be done to adjust to one that is too long.

Glad that thing came with a 'real' stock and not just a PG, hope you get the rest of it worked out OK.

Mudpuppy, I'd call Mossberg and discuss the problem with them. Ask them if it's OK for you to send in the barrel only - they shouldn't have a problem with this. They can then fix the barrel or replace it, and you still have the shotgun, and can buy another barrel for it if you find you need it in the meantime.

Yes, I'll just need to call them. I removed the bead screw and it looks like when it was cut, the screw end broke off (rather than a clean cut, it left a little more on the tip of the screw).

A new bead is probably all it neads-or this one filed and cleaned up. I was thinking a high vis replacement anyway, so no loss.

(I'm not really much of a shotgunner anyhow, just thought I'd do some 3-gun at some point. And I guess your collection isn't really complete without a scattergun...not that it is ever complete. )

To expand on Lee's advice, a points file from an autoparts store works well. The bantam stock has a 13" LOP, and the houge is a 12."

You can dress an extruding bead post right in the barrel using a round ceramic stone,,,,,,no biggy.
