I recent picked up a S&W 6946. It looks as if somebody has either tried to chrome plate the frame or really polish it. I was wondering if beadblasting would hurt the alum frame?
Thanks
Rob
Beadblasting should not do any harm. Since aluminum is softer that steel,I recommend you start out at 40-60 psi air pressure and work up if necessary. I blast steel at 80 psi.
Well, the aluminum frame is hard anodized, or at least it was in the beginning.
If the amateur polishing job didn't already remove it, the bead blasting surely would.
Not sure how much difference it might make on frame rail & pin hole wear, but it might.
I bead-blasted my entire Ruger Mark II Target Pistol.
As stated below, make sure you cover anywhere you do NOT want to blast, and as RC stated, start low PSI and work up as needed (if needed).
I completely dismantled the gun, as I did not want bead blasting of any internal working components for obvious reasons.
I was very happy with the finish on my pistol when I was done, of course I realize we are talking apples and oranges here as mine does not have any aluminum on it (that I am aware of).
Just do enough to make it uniform and get rid of "Bubbalization Marks."
Either that or leave the gun as is and simply call them "Beauty Marks"
