A 12 ga is excellent with either slugs or as mentioned "hard" buck shot. A few companies make shells specifically for "bear attacks".

I will point out one thing. Even with a sling, you will not have your shotgun easily accessable 24/7. A good large caliber revolver (.41 mag, .44 mag or .45 colt) on your person is always there. No it's not as "powerful" as a shotgun, but much more useable than the shotgun several feet away.

A six pack of BEER , in cans , at the ready .

The moment you spot bear , open a beer , set it down a back away slowly .

Open another and set it down .

If the Bear is not interested in the Beer , you have a problem .

A Brenneke 2.75 inch slug will do the job , as long as you put it where it needs to go .

So practice with the Brenneke's , till they are second nature to you .

00 or 000 will also work on all but the very largest of Black Bears , on big Grizzly , skip the Buck , go straight to Herr Brenneke for assistance .

If you do have to shoot a bear , a very unlikely scenario , but after shooting the bear , drink the four remaining Beers .
