I need some help. I am going to Alaska (Aniak River trip) for 10 days. I will be packing my S&W 629 for defense. I need real info on Doubletap or other ammo for bear protection. Please respond.
Keep in mind though that your gun will shoot to a different point of aim with this heavy bullet ammo. You will need to buy and shoot enough of it to sight in and become comfortable with where the gun is shooting.
Fact be known though, no handgun has enough power, and few people are calm or fast enough with a handgun, to stop a bear before it can be all over you.
You would probably be better off with a giant industrial size can of bear pepper spray if you can't carry a big-bore rifle or slug loaded shotgun.
Shoot the BIGGEST Garrett has to offer that will be safe in your gun. Heavy hardcast is what i carry up there in my .454. You will love Alaska. It will not be your last trip!
I don't believe BBore's biggest will chamber in the Smith, but the 305 grain hardcasts should. Garrett's 310 hardcasts are also approved, but not their +P stuff.
A word of warning. Do not come to Anchorage, let alone Bethel, expecting to find a good supply of this or any other ammunition! We've had terrible shortages particularly during the hunting season. Bring what you need with you.
