I know this topic has been beat to death!

I have a blued 4" GP100. I WANT ANOTHER ONE!!! ;)

I am looking at a 5 or 6" SS GP100.

Size/weight is not a consideration here. This question is simply for frame
durability and "toughness".

I have never held or shot or owned an SP101.

With the above qualifications, is there any reason I should consider an SP over a 2nd GP?

My current blued GP is MINT. I want it to stay that way. This is why I'm thinking another GP in SS.

Comments or opines on GP vs. SP greatly appreciated. The new acquisition will not be used for CC, only for fun.

Thanks as always!!!

Many thanks for your quick reply Colt Python!

Any other takers on this thread! Come one, come all!

With the GP100, you have a choice of 3", 4", 5" and 6" barrel lengths. If your second GP100 is not going to be a carry gun, I'd go with the 6" to squeeze the most out of your .357 loads. The 3" and the 5" would be too close to the 4" that you already have.

So as far as frame durability, you'd go with another GP?

Many thanks GP! G22 for carry or G29, GP SS for fun.

GP SS 5 or 6" to be acquired this weekend!

Cheers!

I have the GP-100 in the 6" blued variant and I love it. It is very accurate out to 50 yards. I have taken it deer hunting with me a number of times, but have not yet been able to utilize it. It carries easy enough for me and in cases where I'm driving deer, I even leave the long gun in the truck and only take the revolver. I'm interested to see how well it performs once I get the opportunity to actually use it. That being said the 6" is very accurate for plinking/target shooting. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, if you aren't considering if for CC or open carry.

IMHO, I would go with the GP100. SP if you're going to carry concealed (I chose the LCR for summer carry in shorts and t-shirt). If you're going to shoot it a lot the GP100 is the better (more comfortable) choice.

If you're looking for overall strength the GP100 is hands down stronger than an SP101. The GP is similar to the S&W L frame and the SP is similar to the J frame, no contest IMO.

Without a doubt if you like the 4" GP100 you now have buy a 6" model for the range too... Ruger makes a 6" GP161 in Blue as well as Stainless which is something to consider. I'm a big fan of Blue revolvers.

I consider the SP to be the equivalent of a +P rated J frame for my way of thinking.

But on the GP. Ruger GP100 is a great gun, but I traded my son's GP100 back to him, even trade, for the Ruger Security Six he acquired later as a replacement. Is the Six a better gun than the GP? No, I just like the Six better (my first cartridge revolver was a Six). Maybe grip just fits my hand better, maybe its just nostalgia.

Unmarred GP-100's with the dark finish are ugly. They look so much better with dings and scratches. I really like to see heavy holster wear on them since that indicates they have been drawn repeatedly in practice.

As you can see, I'm still working on improving my gun's appearance. The turn line is almost all the way through. Hopefully, the finish will be beat up badly in the revolver class at the end of the month.

If I'm lucky, it'll be mangled like this S&W Model 29 in a few years:

NO. The SP101 is icky and does nothing well other than shoot 22 LR (even then, the trigger stinks).

Love my 6 inch Blued GP 100, again if you want it for other than carry, I would get the GP 100 in a 6 Inch Bbl. Great to shoot, accurate and built to last.

I don't know that you'll find a .357 frame tougher or more durable than a GP100 (and I'm a S&W 686 guy). That should be the least of your concerns with that gun.
Colt King Cobra....It's forged frame is superior to Rugers cast...One famous gunsmith has called it the strongest mid framed DA .357 made.

And here I thought it was going to be about which gun oil/lubricant was best. :p

Excellent answers all!! Many thanks.

Chose a low mileage GP SS 6" that had just come in so they have to wait. Now I have to wait, but it's mine!

If you've never tried a Security Six, I'd suggest giving it a go. They're tough but a bit lighter than the GP-100 and are really nice revolvers.

Make up your mind. If you want a 6" six shooter, why would you go haring off after a 3" five shot? Frame strength? They're both Rugers. I'm not sure how much more you want.

I have both a 6" GP (blued) and a 4" SP SS (they don't come with longer barrels than that in the SP). The GP is more accurate than the SP, and has much less felt recoil. Either can handle ANY .357 mag load, with ease. That said, follow what several others have said, and get the GP if you don't want to carry it concealed.
