Great pictures.

When using the ulu to separate the meat from, what my family has always called, the silver; do you use one stroke or many in a shaving pattern? We have always used a fillet knife but it is no where near as efficient as that looks. I am going to have to make one of those.

One pressing stroke.
Thats the angle of the one sided ULU.....its a /l kind of edge, not a 'V' kind.
its the best sinew on the animals and the Wife drys it and then rubs it to seperate the fibers, and peels off threads to use as , well, thread :D

The sinew swells with the leather and keeps the stich tight and from ripping the leather.

Glad your likeing these threads. Sometimes I wonder if my fairly routine year bores folks here, and at other forums. Ive been at this all my adult life and it seems so sometimes. ~~LOL!!~~

I am never bored.......

Not the least bit boring. Both my wife and I were very interested. Looks like quite the life you have there.

I especially liked the no nonsense comment about the rifle and ammunition used and then the dealing with the kill - I grow bored with people droning on about the endless detail involved in hunting and processing of game as though it is some mythical quest and hasn't been done millions of times with basic equipment and knowledge. You know the type: "Mine is the best; knife, rifle, load, technique etc..."

I also enjoyed it very much although I would have liked to see a few pics of the heard. Great seeing people be self sufficient. The bunny shirt in the 2nd from last pic made me laugh.

I think all us lower 48ers just envy the life style. :D However, I always try to temper that by thinking about the cold, the long darkness, the mosquitoes in summer (worse than the Texas coast), and such. Ah, well, fun to dream about the lifestyle, but I don't know if I'd be cut out for it. Takes a special breed of person, I reckon. :D Certainly ain't the place for old retired farts, eh Art? ROFL! Well, at least in Terlingua, one could get life flighted and MIGHT survive. It ain't but a few hours to El Paso, eh? :D Up where Caribou is, dang, have a heart attack, chew an aspirin, you're on your own, sport.

Nice to see the practical 'whatever works' approach form someone with experience. some folks would be horrified to see children witnessing and participating, but it's food for the family, right? no big deal. good to see the skills and mindset passed on to the next gen.

i've been known to butcher deer in an old bathtub with a garden hose and a box of gallon ziplock bags... but i don't look 'traditional' or 'rustic', i look 'hillbilly'... you aren't gonna get pictures of that.

I LOVE the big flat-grind ulu, btw.

You have a really nice family, and I'm jealous. Mine would never participate in anything but the eating part.

That's what I get for marrying a city slicker. I do miss the old days.

Good pictures and take care of the loved ones.

Carabou, I always enjoy reading your posts and threads. I can only say thanks and wish you all the best.

Its so refreshing to see people still living a real life! I respect that hugely!

I wish more kids could be exposed to real life survival and food prep like that.
It puts that DISNEY perspective where it belongs.
The sooner our children learn the realities of life, the sooner they become healthy adults!

We all gotta work, so it's best to enjoy what yer doing.......I'm glad you guys like this stuff too :D

I do enjoy shareing with ya.

Please do keep on sharing with us, I for one love to see and learn new things even though they may be old things to you. Such as I knew about sinew thread but had no idea what sinew was best.
