Bedside weapon

I keep a Mossberg Maverick 12 gauge propped up against the bookshelf beside my bed. It's loaded with 6 rounds, safety on.

I have a Glock 27 but also have kids and that gun is entirely too easy to fire to keep around them.

Also have a Beretta 92FS but I'm not very proficient in handling the gun quickly, good shot, just not familiar enough with the safety. The DA pull is too stiff, not real quick at cocking the thing and if it were cocked it would be too easy for my kids to fire. It would be nice if I could keep it cocked and locked.

Yes, I know, I need a 1911.

within arms reach right now in bed i have a Springfield XD-45 sporting 14rds of Hornady Tap ammo, Next to that is a Mossberg 500 full up with Hornady Tap 00 Buck.

On my Fiancee's side is a Ruger P95. 18rds of her favorite 9mm ammo which happens to be Golden Sabers.

all have weapon mounted lights too...

Has anyone ever started up a chainsaw when they heard an intruder? Scary.....they've got to think to themselves, "This guys is nuts."

Desert Eagle .44 Mk.VII under the pillow; FAL or M1A leaned against the nightstand. If I wake up in time to get to the rifle, then fine. But if I wake up to someone in the room already, while they are going for the unchambered rifle in plain sight, a rather nasty surprise is drawing down upon them from the "sleeping" victim...

awesome!... lol...

im coming at them in the nude.... nobody wants to fight the naked guy! In the words of rodney carrington "You can take a big SOB with a tiny pecker" LOL

How about a side by side 12 gauge?

Two rounds should do the trick and it's less prone to being fumbled while half comatose. Cut down to 18 1/2 inches it should be legal. (At least in OR, I believe)

A coach gun. No need to cut it, most come with an 18.5" barrel. I was thinking about picking one up used myself for HD/range blaster. They have some nasty kick. Most I've seen are in the $3xx range...

Within arm's reach from the bed, a 3" S&W Model 65 .357 loaded with Remington Golden Sabers, and a Remington 870 Express 18.5" loaded with Estate #4 Buck.

My Smith and Wesson model 410 with factory Crimson Trace does that job nicely. Nothing works nicer than a laser in dim light, 10rd capacity, light and easy to point. The laser itself is enough to send the BGs running!!!!!

For me, it's about what you are most comfortable shooting and what you would trust your life to not how much it would cost.

That would be my Gen 2 G17 with night sights. I have shot it so much and it is 100% reliable. It's like an extension of me and I don't have to think about what to do next. Besides it's always handy, parked on the bed frame.

S&W Model 19-4, .357 Magnum, 2 1/2" barrel. Should get the job done if needed whilst my fiancee and I cower in the bathroom waiting for the cops to show up. Not much distance between our shower and the bathroom door, so a shotgun would be too cumbersome.

If 6 Speer Gold Dots don't dissuade the person from continuing to try to get at us, nothing will.

At the distances encountered indoors, I don't think buckshot will have the "peppering" effect you speak of. That said, my night time friend is a Remington 870 loaded with 00 Buck.

The best thing you can do, IMO, is to have a plan. Get your family into one room and defend only that room. I'm not trained to clear a house, with any type of firearm, so I have no intention of doing so. My TV can be replaced, but my wife and I cannot. Best of luck to you and yours!
Exactly, for example my fiancee and I have the plan that at any sign of intrusion, I lock our bedroom door, get my S&W Model 19 and Streamlight Polytac (C4 LED), she gets her cellphone off the nightstand, and we get in the bathroom and lock THAT door. That means perp has to get through two locked bedroom doors, the second of which holds a nasty surprise for when that doorknob jiggles. I think a thought-out, practiced plan is just as important as the home defense firearm.

A practiced plan would work only partially.

You would need a different plan for every entry point, the time of day and other factors. If they use a window instead of one of the doors then you need other plans.

Every scenerio will be different and play out second by second. Do you plan for one perp or multiples?

Getting behind 3 locked doors would work if you had plenty of time to do the plan. If you don't wake up until they are waking you beside the bed, the plans goes out the window.

Do you make noise and yell I have a gun, so they get scared and hopefully leave or do you be quiet so you can get a better shot?

My dogs are and will always be the best deterent. Beyond that, Remington 870 youth model in 20 gauge. It's just short enough that it can be moved around my house easily.

/flame suit ON
Taurus Judge, dutch-loaded with 3 triple-aught .410s and 2 .45 Colt Silvertips
-and-
Ruger 10-22 with CCI Velocitors.

For realsies.
/flame suit OFF

The gun you shoot the best with. A hit with a Beretta Tomcat is better than a miss with a 12 gauge.

Best answer so far. All I would add is to use what you, yourself have the most confidence with and what works the best in your particular scenario. Everyone on the internet has a opinion of what gun is best.......much of the time it is the gun they own....and they have only ever owned one.

I like a short .38 by the bed. Of course, I like it everywhere else, too, but...
I tend to wake up groggy as I get older, and I don't want anything too complicated for defense at the bedside. Also, I like the short barrel guns for not banging into things as I bring it up. (I keep it on the floor with the bed skirt over it.)

Glock 21. I've trained extensively with it, mine has night sites, a trigger job and 13+1 of .45 gold dots with an extra mag sitting next to it.

OoOOOoOo!!!!.... Look at this killer with a hair trigger and cop killer bullets!

lol... just playing... but you know some people freak out about having a defense gun with a modified trigger
