There was this one....the last of the 44 Magnums....Before the guns were Model Marked.

From 1957......

This is a 4-Screw .44 Magnum. :)

Very nice. A pre-29 in 4" is high on my "but someday" list. That one is very, very nice and also elegant with the plain target grips.

What was the name it was catalogued under?
It sure is beautiful.
Blue looks so much better than stainless.

Gizmo, for legal reasons can I just call you "Dad"? The one thing I like most about your collection is the varitety is large and yet very simple.

Giz -

Two questions for you:

1) When did S&W start the rr/wo option, do you know?

2) Did many of those guns ship with the rosewood plain target grips like that?

I ask as, coincidentally, I bought a 29 "no dash" four screw like that this past weekend. It has both those features and is a twin to that one (except more wear on the muzzle and a 6.5" barrel). I envy the 4" though; it's more desirable in my estimation.

I can not see the pictures because the network nazi's block photobucket!!!!

ORO,

To the best of my knowledge the White Outline and Red Ramp were there from the beginning.

My gun is a 1957 4".

In 1956 a little more then 140 5-Screw frames were made in that barrel length. In September 1956, S&W directed that the upper side plate screw be deleted and in early 1957 44 Magnums with a 3-screw side plate began to be shipped (reported as early as April 1957). Four-screw and five-screw 44 Magnums were shipped together for about the first six months of 1957.

So I've been wondering just how many 4-Screw 4" guns were made....

As for the smooth targets, they were on the gun when the previous owner bought it ~ new....;) I've seen many examples on the early 44 Magnums. Can't tell you what the ratio would be...

I love the older style S&W revolvers as much as I detest the new. True, everything Smith has done can be labeled an "improvement," but then why don't they have the same class? I've always wished S&W would go back to stamping the side plates and, on the stainless models, flash chroming the hammers/triggers. And don't get me started on the bluing....

Sigh.

Excellent information - that was what I was guessing. People see the smooth targets and say "replacement" but they are too well-fit, and appear on too many guns (in my experience) to all be replacements. Someone told me it's because they aren't numbered to the guns like the Magnas and diamond targets are; it makes people assume they are replacements when they are not.

I see 4" four-screws periodically, but no clue either as to the ratio or number of those - but it's my favorite, too. For me it's a matter of finding the one I like at the price I like (and with money in the gun "kitty" at the time). I've been trying for a year or so actively at this point. From now on I'm treating the 6" four-screw as a "bank account" and I'll sell it/trade it when the right 4" four-screw comes along. That one is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing the pictures and information.

Oro,

Quick little correction to my post above...

Info from Bill Cross...

It is estimated that approximately 155 44 Magnums with a 4-inch barrel were actually shipped in 1956.

Well there go my dreams of getting a "first year." ;) I had really wanted that, but I'm happy to settle for any four" four-screw, but preferably with smooth target grips.
