i have been thinking about cometiition shooting for a while now. what would be a good starting .22 semi- auto pistol, that i won't have to mortgage my first born to buy? all i have now is a walther p-22. it is a nice little plinker, but it would have no buisness showing up at a comp. shoot. unless i wanted to win by everybody else falling over laughing! i do not hink that i will get super serious about this, at least right away. so i do not want to spend a ton of money to start out with. if i really enjoy it, and i do well, then maybe i would step up to a much better gun. thanks. p.s. does that competition .22target ammo really make that big of a difference?

One of the guys I shoot Bullseye with, made Master shooting a Ruger 22/45 with iron sights. All he had done to it, was a trigger job.

Most of the guys I shoot with, use either CCI std velocity, Aguila, or Federal. Only know of one guy that spends the big bucks for Eley match. When I was shooting in the Navy, we used Winchester T22 with good results.

It really depends on what kind of competition you want to get into.

The only matches I'm aware of where you can shoot a .22 pistol are the International pistol events (think Olympic-style competition), NRA Bullseye, some Silhouette* matches, and various bowling pin and steel matches.

If you're looking to get started in the Bullseye, International, or Pin/Steel stuff you can start out with a basic Ruger Mark II or III and make upgrades as your finances and skill development allow.

That said, if you can swing the cost of a Smith and Wesson Model 41, it's a much, much nicer pistol out of the box than any of the Rugers, and will require less after-market modification.

People have made Master with all kinds of different guns, and I have yet to see anyone get laughed off the line at a shooting match of any sort because of the gun they have.

That's pretty amazing. Was he able to somehow fabricate after-market grips for his 22/45? I always assumed the polymer frame of the 22/45's meant you couldn't really do much customizing.

*I have no first hand experience with these kinds of competitions, so I don't really know what would be an appropriate gun for them.

Nope. Standard grips. He also has been using his Hardball EIC gun for the CF and .45 matches. He just got around to buying a dedicated Wad gun. He made Distinguished the same time I did. He also has a Marvel with a Red dot, but has not been shooting it in matches. He's been trying to find what ammo it likes the best. He's been shooting about three years. He got his Master card right after Camp Perry last year.
