Behavior of different ammos.

Curious question as to why certain commercial rounds behave better than others. Last year I bought several boxes of Winchester Q4369 JHP .40 cal rounds in a white box black lettering in the 180g flavor. The first time I shot a box of these rounds, they were all over the place. I thought it was just me having a bad day. I try to make it to the range at least once a month lately, and usually shoot FMJ, (American Eagle, PMC, Speer, etc.) and can usually keep the hits on or real close to a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 Post-it at 10-13 yards. Recently I shot a couple of mags of the Winchester JHPs and again the hits were all over the place. The American Eagle and Speer were grouped well as usual.

There was a young fellow a couple of lanes down from me that was shooting with a pistol rest. I explained about the multi-fliers and he agreed to shoot some of the Winchesters. He too experienced a group bigger than a big dinner plate from the rest using both my pistol and one of his Sigs. So I don't think it was all me.

I guess my question might be, what characteristics cause some commercial rounds to be much more accurate than others? ...and consistantly off, from box to box? One would think Winchester might have better quality control

Anyway they have been relegated to the range fodder box, albeit expensive fodder.

Is that the ZQ4369 that hit the market a while back for $25 a box or so?

It is my understanding that this particular ammunition is contract over-run or QC rejected. The rumors as to why it was rejected were accuracy related. That could be the problem, but no promises.

Try another JHP and see if you get better results. That is why it is critical to test any round intended to be carried for self defense/duty purposes.
