I'm looking to obtain a CO CCW while I am away at school (Trinidad Gunsmith program). The program lasts for a year or so (to get an Associates of Applied Science in Gunsmithing). The state defines a resident as a person who has resided there for 90 days or more. Would I even be able to qualify for one after three months?

Look at the concealed carry web site or talk to the SO down there. Heck somebody at the school should know.
I am pretty sure that you can't carry dual residency but if your home state has reciprocity with CO. then just get your permit there and maintain that you are a non resident student.
Sorry just saw your home state. Check the regs but the SO will play a big part as well, I think they are allowed a fairly long time to produce your permit so by the time you qualify and the permit gets to you you might be well into your year.

I'm guessing that you have zero chance of getting a carry permit from your native state of Illinois.

Once you've resided in the state for 90 consecutive days, you should be good to go. What I would suggest that you do is to get a few pertinent documents, with dates, the first day you arrive here (if you are not here already). Bills, apartment lease, something, almost anything, and go get your Colorado Driver's license on that 90th or 91st day.

Once you have the DL, go get your permit.

You'd be guessing right. Illinois doesn't issue CCW permits at all. I don't mean rarely, or only to the rich and connected. I mean they have no law establishing a CCW permit. You can't issue that which does not exist.

I know this sounds weird, but if I am 'renting' property from the school (i.e my own dorm), would that be enough? By the way for those that don't know, Illinois has NO form of carry, no open or concealed (and that's why we've sued the state). I do have a non-res PA permit, but I'm guessing Colorado would not even honor that one. The reason as to why I would like a CCW license in Colorado is more to do with the schools policy. They allow firearms for gunsmith students in dorms, but only if they are none functioning, the exception to this is if you have a CCW license, then you can have them on campus in whatever state you wish them to be (and I have read their policy for both campus and dorms).

I enrolled in a Colorado school less than a month after being seperated from active duty and took up residence in a dorm for the first semester I attended. I used the dorm room as my address whenever I needed to list an address. I made sure I changed it after I moved but it worked. I think I have an old drivers liscence with that address.

Thanks, I was kind of worried I would not be able to do this. Are there any gun shops in or around Trinidad?
