Anyone have much experience with Bell & Carlson? I'm looking for a better stock than what came on my Weatherby Vanguard. I was specifically looking at their Medalist line with the aluminum pillar bedding. I can get one from Midway for just over $200.00 which is a good bit better than anything comparable (on paper at least) from the other big names.

Oh and before you badmouth my cheap Howa 1500 (that is what the Vanguards are), know that I paid $169.00 for it brand new and it is sub MOA in my hands from a bench with factory ammo. :what: I've had a lot more expensive Remchesters not even close to this.

I bought a Bell and Carlson thumbhole stock for my Model 70 to replace the cheap factory stock. The B&C was stronger and more rigid and fit perfectly after a small amount of filing (the B&C stock was rounded around the rear tang and my gun was squared......I cut the corners and it dropped right in.) The stock is very durable and I've abused it from the PA foothills to the Rockies.

B&C did it for me

I recently put a Bell & Carlson Premiere Thunbhole stock on a Mauser that I spoterized (oh, the Horror). It is very, very nice.

You will not be disappointed.

By the way...the HOWAs are one of the best kept secrets on the market, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........................... ;)

Range report

I finally completed my mauser project including the B&C Thumbhole stock today and went to the range so that I could give you some honest feedback.

WOW :what:

I am very impressed with this stock! I acra-glassed the action even though B&C says it isn't necessary. Believe me the difference is very noticable. I'm talking about .75 MAO groups with handloads that I was previously getting 1.5 MAO groups with. Same loads, only diffrence is glass bedding.

The stock itself was a pleasure to shoot and fitting was drop-in with only a little grinding for my barrel and action here and there. The Pachmyr decelrator pad took ALL the bite out if the .308, not that it had a lot, but I fired 20 rounds in about 20 minutes and never felt anything.

All in all I am very pleased. I also did a little Duracoat work adding green to the black for a little camo look, but it would have been fine as is from B&C.

I would not hesitate to purchase the stock form B&C. Had they had a thumbhole with the Pillar bedding I would probably have dome that, but I really wanted the thumbhole. If you don't need the thumbhole, definately go for the Piller bedding job. I hear very good things about it.

Hope that helps
