Does anyone know of anbody that makes a redesigned shell lifter that does'nt catch your thumb during rapid loading?

I am not aware of any after-market carrier for the Benelli M1 without the 'U' shaped notch. (It hurts something awful when you pinch your thumb in the carrier doesn't it.
Your best and probably your only bet would find someone local that can weld up the notch, reshape and bead blast or refinish your existing carrier.

I have done quite a few see the photo below.
If you can't find someone local let me know I would be glad to help you out.
Cost is $25.00 exchange.

Jim,

Thanks, there are few more neat touches that have been done to the guns as well like light load cycling (2 3/4 dram 1oz load at 1185fps AA Ultra light), 3lb trigger pull, bolt modification to allow a round on the carrier, also to be able to still load a round in the mag tube if the bolt does not close completely (say a 3:00 instead of 2:00, you know when everything goes wrong)
8 round tube, big fiber optic front sight, simms recoil pad, etc.
Basic 3-gun shotgun.

Jeff,

I will see what I can do later today.
Which modification were you interested in? Extra round or loading with bolt at 3:00 or both?

Jeff #1:

I don't know what you mean by loading with bolt @ 3:00. Please explain. I am interested in modifying my 20 ga Montefeltro for capability of extra round on the carrier, like my old SBE does.

I also wouldn't mind if my SBE functioned better with light (1oz) loads without giving up any reliability or durability on 3.5" heavy stuff.

Thanks,

Jeff,

Sometimes the bolt on Benellis don't always close leaving the extractor at the 3:00 position (instead of closed at 2:00 position) If you are shooting a match and the bolt does not close completely and you shove a round into the mag tube during a reload you now have a jamb, can't open the bolt and probably can't close the bolt so you have to pull the half loaded round back out before you can proceed. the one modification prevents that problem. Pretty much a competition mod. (Sorry about the long explanation)

I will see what I can do as far as photos for a round on the carrier later today.

As for your SBE that is 2 extremes, it could probably be made to cycle the light loads, but the heavy 3.5" would be a little hard on the gun due to less recoil spring pressure. You won't be able to shoot as light of loads in the SBE as in an M1 (more bolt mass in the SBE)
I leave my SBE for the heavy loads and use my M1's for the lighter stuff.

Hope that answered your questions if not let me know.

Yikes... finding this thread was like finding a nugget of gold... I've been looking for an after-market change to the current shell carrier setup for my Benelli. My thumb can't take it any more!

Jeff (c-rum) - so $25 plus the stock shell carrier in exchange for a modified shell carrier? What a bargain to save a thumb... :D

By any chance, do you or anyone here know of where I can get a modified/larger bolt handle for the M1? Something similar to the Scattergun/Wilson Combat bolt handle?

-Jim

Jim,

That is correct I should have several carriers finshed this week and ready to go. If I can help you out let me know. Your thumb will thank you.:D

DMW http://davesmetalworks.com/cquest.htmlnd and
GG&G http://www.gggaz.com/products/benelli.php
both offer extended bolt handles. The GG&G is pretty light weight which is a good thing.

If you experience malfunctions after installing an extended bolt handle it will be a good possibility it is due to the extra weight that was added to the bolt so be aware of this.

Jeff

Jeff,

You also mentioned a mod that allows the newer guns to hold an extra shell in the carrier - I assume you filled the extra notch in the newer bolt carriers with weld in to allow this? Any chance you offer this service as well? I'd thought about doing this before, but was worried about the welding messing with any heat treating on the carrier - you think that would cause any issues?

Thanks,
Rocko

c-rum/Jeff,

Just sent you an email, but wanted to publicly thank you for your help and input. As a shotgun/Benelli newbie, it is great to have someone that knows this stuff to ask questions of. Better yet, it is great to have someone that you can buy the parts from or get to do the work!!!!!

Thanks for helping us wanna-bes learn!!!!!!

c-rum,

Do you know if the carriers are the same between the M1 and the M3? I have an M3 and would like the modification done but I am not sure about the carrier. If they are the same then it won't be a problem but if they are different then I guess you would have to modify my carrier?

Thanks,

Neal in AZ
