Hi, does anyone know the difference between 92F and 92FS? I'm considering buying a Beretta but kinda confused by all the variants... Thanks!

From Wikipedia:

92S
In order to meet requirements of some law enforcement agencies, Beretta modified the Beretta 92 by adding a slide-mounted combined safety and decocking lever, replacing the frame mounted manual thumb safety. This resulted in the 92S which was adopted by several Italian law enforcement and military units. The later relocation of the magazine release button means these models (92 & 92S) cannot necessarily use later magazines, unless they have notches in both areas.

92SB (92S-1)
Initially called the 92S-1 when it was specifically designed for US Air Force trials (which it won), the model name officially adopted was the 92SB. It included the changes of the 92S, added a firing pin block (thus the addition of the "B" to the name), and relocated the magazine release catch from the bottom of the grip to the lower bottom of the trigger guard.
92SB Compact (1981 – 1991), shortened barrel and slide (13-round magazine capacity). It was replaced by the "92 Compact L".

92F (92SB-F)
Beretta modified the model 92SB slightly to create the 92SB-F (the "F" added to denote entry of the model in U.S. Government federal testing) and, later, the 92G for French Government testing, by making the following changes:
Design of all the parts to make them 100% interchangeable to simplify maintenance for large government organizations.
Modified the front of the trigger guard so that one could use finger support for easier aiming.
Recurved the forward base of the grip to aid aiming.
Hard chromed the barrel bore to protect it from corrosion and to reduce wear.
New surface coating on the slide called Bruniton, which allegedly provides better corrosion resistance than the previous plain blued finish.

So, does that mean 92F = 92FS?
no, a 92F and 92FS are externally similar but the 92fs has a slide retaining pin to "fix" an anecdotal problem that occurred during the XM9 trials. The 92FS replaced the 92F in the late 80's, there are far more 92FS. Everything else is the same except for small changes in manufacturing techniques that has occured over the long 20 year production (slanted dust cover, minor polymer parts).

Brigadier

The Brigadier model introduced the re-enforced, heavier slide to the BERETTA 92 and 96 lines.

It was developed after the .40 caliber BERETTA 96 failed the I&NS tests in the 1990's. The slide features a built up area around the locking lugs to help deal with the stress from using high velocity .40 caliber ammo.

The original Brigadier also had a shorter barrel of 4.7 inches instead of the standard 4.9 inch one used on the BERETTA 92.

The same beefed up slide design is used on the BERETTA Elite and Border Marshal series.

Also, stainless steel BERETTA'S are known as INOX models.

The "anecdotal problem" mentioned above had to do with slides flying back off the frames when fired, wrecking the bridgework of the shooter. As the saying is rumored to have gone before the FS improvements, "You're not a Navy SEAL 'till you've eaten Italian steel."

I'm getting a 92FS soon and wondering which mags and grip panels will
interchange with it. CDNN's current site doesn't have a bunch of stuff specifically
marked "92SF". Will a 92F mag fit?
Thanks.

Yes, 92F mags will work in a 92FS, D, G, SG, M9, M9A1, etc.

The only difference in a typical 92F and FS, as mentioned, is the enlarged hammer pin on the FS that keeps the slide from coming off if it breaks.

ETA: the reason some very early M9 slides broke is because your high speed/low drag guys where running them with very hot subgun ammo.

Use only beretta and mecgar magazines

Kurt,

I purchased some of the "MILITARY" magazines for the BERETTA 92. I could barely get them half way into the grip.

As the military has had complaints caused by third party magazines, I will buy only BERETTA and MECGAR mags in the future.
