I just ordered a 1301 Competition with a 21" barrel to use as my new primary HD shotgun. I have spent the first 39 years of my life believing a SD/HD shotgun HAD to be a pump with an 18" +/- barrel. I guess I've changed my thinking a bit.

I enjoy shooting all of my shotguns, and the old HD guns - 870, 500, 590, etc., never did it for me in the true sense of shooting enjoyment. They are tools, and do the job quite well, but the reliability of semi-auto shotguns is so great now (Italians make semi-auto shotguns like Germans make semi-auto handguns) that I think the chance of failure in a high stress situation might actually be greater with a pump - think short stroking. I looked at the usual suspects when it comes to semi-auto SG.....Benelli, FNH, Mossberg, etc. (Remington anything is off my list these days). At the end of the day, the price point, reliability, LOP, action, size and looks brought me back to the Beretta time and time again.

I didn't go with the "Tactical" 1301 because I don't want a rail, ghost ring sight, or anything named tactical
I think the 21" Comp is a great all-purpose shotgun - SD/HD, 3-Gun, hunting (takes choke tubes), shooting trap/skeet, etc. - just need a plus 3 or 4 tube and a green FO front sight and I think it's good to go.

Anyone have one of these to let me in on anything I would need to do to make it "better"?

Thanks for the link 1K ........ seems like that's a no-brainier add-on to prevent a shell dump and rendering it (probably) useless without breaking it down?
