I checked the berettaweb site ( http://www.berettaweb.com/armi/Beretta mod 1934 & 1935.htm ) for information on my 1934 -- Just so happens that I have a G14499 serial number. Notice that G series is listed with the same numbers for 1943-45 and 1970 - 75. Is this a misprint - if not how do you tell the difference?

The year in Roman numerals is not the calendar year (e.g., 1941) but the year of Mussolini's rule, starting with the year 1922 as the Year 1 (the advent of the new "Messiah"). So add the Roman numeral to 1921 to get the true date of manufacture. For example, "XIX" (19) added to 1921 gives a date of 1940.

The Roman numbers continued in use for quite a while after the war, as it took time (this is Italy, remember) to change the law.
