ok, well the subject about says it all..

I have a beretta 92 here, that functions flawlessly, except when you fire off a round in the chamber without a mag, then it has a tendency to stovepipe, which I guess isn't a huge deal, as theres no following round for the stovepiping to screw up...

anyways, anyone else have any experience with this?

I use factory mags(prolly not relevant here), and the malfunctions occured with winchester and speer ammo.

Have you checked your ejector (not extractor)?

The extractor pulls the empty case out of the chamber and as it pulls it back, the casing hits the ejector which pops it loose from the extractor and flips it out of the gun. If the ejector is missing or broken, often the gun will still eject empties due to upward pressure from the rounds in the magazine. But that doesn't work without a magazine or when the mag is empty.

Weak extractor spring or dirty extractor cut. Without the magazine, there is nothing holding the empty case in proper position to hit the ejector. Spray it out with solvent, if that doesn't work replace the spring. Check extractor for damge in the hook area.

ejector is there, but is loose, wiggles just a little bit, it did'nt worry me as I thought ALL beretta's were like that.

I'll strip it down later and see what else I can see in there...

oh, and it has never jammed on the last round from a magazine, like I said, just when there is one round in the pipe and its fired without a magazine, thats the only time this has happened...

weird, huh?

I hope you're not doing that all the time. Assuming the empty case does clear, the slide is slamming back home at full force which can be quite rough on the pistol. In all likelihood the pistol wasn't really designed to fire just a single round without a mag, and it wouldn't surprise me if other makes and models of handguns also have ejection difficulties when being fired without a mag.

dsk,

That's generally true of autopistols, but the Beretta manual specifically states that single loading a round directly into the chamber is acceptable. I agree that it's putting a bit more wear on the pistol compared to loading from the mag, but I don't think it's going to be a noticeable or significant amount of extra wear unless it is done a LOT.

ziadel,

A little bit of wiggle in the ejector shouldn't be a problem. Check to make sure that the end isn't broken, and that the ejector isn't bent.

I guess it could be some sort of wierd problem with the extractor, but I can't see it in my head if it is. You could look the extractor over carefully to make sure it looks ok. I would think that if it were the extractor, you'd see the problems more consistently, not just when the mag is out.

You might also try posting your problem here.
