Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a new Beretta 92 FS. When I got home and examined it under the light I saw that the finish is unlike any Beretta I've ever seen. It looks textured, almost like an orange peel. I went to the store and looked at other ones and they are nice and smooth. My question is:

Is this finish defective? Is the texture caused by the finish or is that actually the texture of the slide steel? I paid 600 bucks for this, so maybe I'm being OCD. Please advise :)

Note: this is an Italian beretta

Its hard to see from your picture but it looks almost powder coated, which if too much powder was applied can result in an orange peel finish. I can't say for sure, I'm just saying from looking at your picture that's what it looks like.

Was it new?

I have 3 Beretta 92 variations and none look like that.

Exactly the reason I carry a Micro-Stream light in my shirt pocket when going gun buying.

They never have good lighting in gun shops and gun shows.

It's brand new and I haven't fired it yet. The store I got it from has a 30 day "no questions" return policy on guns, but I don't want to be "that guy".

Here are two of mine for reference. If its a safe queen, be that guy. If it meant to be a serious shooter I wouldn't worry about it.

I saw the Bruniton finish being applied at the factory. The parts are hung on a rack with wire hooks and sprayed by hand by what looks like a paint sprayer. The guy spraying the guns obviously over-did the one you got. I personally would ask for a replacement. The Bruniton finish is the one thing I most dislike about the current run of Berettas. Spray paint is for cars, not guns. Of course it's a lot cheaper than bluing them.

I don't see a problem with it. If it isn't a hassle for you to exchange it, then you might as well. I've returned items for relatively minor issues, with a relatively pricey item like a firearm you should be completely happy with it.

My new one looks the same. My Stoeger Cougar was even worse. But the Cougar was so easy to polish up with 2000 grit sandpaper, that I did the same to the flats on my 92 and it came out perfect.

I've never seen one with that "texture" before. Honestly I don't think it looks bad at all. In fact, maybe even unique. Its your gun though and your $600. If it bothers you, take it back. It may be a hassle to do so now, but you'll ultimately be happier after exchanging it. That is, again, if the finish really bothers you.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I've decided to keep the pistol and see how it shoots. Someday I'll buy one with a nicer finish and then I'll have two!

I was really surprised to hear that Beretta hand-sprays the finish at the factory. I thought an outfit that size would almost certainly use automated systems to ensure consistency.
